New LG In Arkansas?
Last Updated on Tuesday, 8 August 2006 03:59 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 8 August 2006 03:59
It looks like the battle
for the Lt. Governor office in
the Fall. Based off recent comments
by Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, it appears as though
there will be no special election to fill the vacant Lt. Governor seat in
interested parties seem to think it would be better (and cheaper) to just wait
a few more months.
“Republican and
Democrat officials say they're not making plans for any special election and
will wait to see what Huckabee does. But neither
seemed eager for a special election as the general election nears. ‘It's
so close to an election time anyway that you'll have to deal with the
additional expense of having a separate election,’ said Jason Willett,
chairman of the state Democrats. ‘I don't see any party benefiting from a
race.’ Clint Reed, executive director of the state GOP, said the party is
still mourning the loss of Rockefeller and said no one within the party is
pushing for an immediate replacement. ‘There's not an urgent call across
the state to fill this replacement, so we feel like it's not urgently needed,’
Reed said. ‘It's not something that is a front burner issue for us.’

Two state and local GOP officials face off in congressional primary runoff
Last Updated on Wednesday, 26 July 2006 05:07 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 26 July 2006 05:07
Republican Lt. Governor Mary
Fallin, and Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett
advanced to the August 22nd GOP congressional primary runoff in
Oklahoma. Coming third place, but not advancing to the runoff is another
state and local official, Corporation Commissioner Denise Bode. In
total, there were 6 Republican candidates vying for the GOP nomination, but as
you can see the state and local official – Fallin, Cornett, and Bode ran
the strongest races.
As the results
of this race show, Republican state and local leaders are the very future
national leaders of the country.
Democrat David Hunter, an Oklahoma City surgeon, awaits the winner of
the Fallin – Cornett runoff, in the November General Election to replace
outgoing Congressman Ernest Istook in this strong GOP district.

Where will she take her truck next?

The Tupelo Mississippi Daily Journal runs a profile on a very successful state and local official in the Magnolia State – Republican Lieutenant Governor Amy Tuck.
In January, Governor Tuck will be starting her final year as Mississippi’s Lt. Governor ending another chapter in what has been a long record of service to the people of Mississippi that began when she was elected to the state senate in 1990 as a conservative Democrat.
Tuck was elected to the Office of Lt. Governor in 1999, eventually joining the sweeping tide of conservative, commonsense democrats who joined the Republican Party across the south during that time, and re-elected in 2003 with over 60% of the vote.
The Lt. Governor’s future is widely accepted to be very bright in Mississippi – the only question is what does this Republican Lt. Governor do next – and who will take her place?

So you are telling me that since 1999, the Dem leadership in the Alabama Senate have determined that they actually need more power and decided they would claim “powers traditionally held by the lieutenant governor”? As if this race wasn’t already exciting, it looks as though the winner of the Strange vs. Folsom contest could be headed for an exciting showdown in the Senate. Check out the article “Next Lieutenant Governor Could Expand Powers” than ran on Saturday.

L.G. Update

State Senator Casey Cagle defeated former Christian Coalition head Ralph Reed in yesterday’s GOP primary in Georgia. With 97% reporting Cagle pulled 226,772 of 404,373, or 56.07% to Reed’s 177,601, or 43.92%. While Senator Cagle rests up and begins raising money for the General Election, he’ll have to wait until the August 8th Democrat runoff between Democrats Greg Hecht and Jim Martin.
As an aside – check out this Cagle Ad that ran throughout the campaign.
Next door in Alabama businessman Luther Strange defeated George Wallace, Jr in that state’s LG GOP primary runoff. With 99 percent of the precincts reporting, Strange had 108,224 votes, 55 percent, to Wallace's 89,636, or 45 percent. Big Luther’s opponent in November will be former Governor and Lt. Governor Jim Folsom, Jr. Strange ran a creative campaign, raising $2.8 million (at least) against an opponent with one of the most popular family names in Alabama politics. Congratulations to both men for running stellar campaigns.
Not only is Luther Strange a good fundraiser and campaigner, he has a great sense of humor to boot!
Congratulations to the Republican nominees. On to November.

OK LG Candidates Debate
Last Updated on Wednesday, 12 July 2006 08:56 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 12 July 2006 08:56
Few
differences could be found Monday between the two front-running GOP candidates
for lieutenant governor.
Both
agreed they are conservative and said they favor cuts in the state's income
tax, are against abortion and agree the state has the power to do something
about illegal immigrants.
Both have a record of standing up for the issues that matter most to
Oklahomans, and no doubt will continue to do so.
