VT: Lt. Governor leads all 5 Democrats for Governor

From BurlingtonFreePress.com:

A poll released Wednesday showed Republican Brian Dubie leading all five Democratic candidates for governor.

The poll, by the national polling firm Rasmussen Reports, indicated Democrat Deb Markowitz came the closest to Dubie and was the only one against whom he received less than 50 percent support. The poll showed Dubie leading Markowitz, 47 percent to 40 percent.

Dubie’s and Markowitz’s campaigns took the poll as good news. So did Democrat Peter Shumlin, who gained some footing compared with a March poll by the same firm.

“This is encouraging,” Dubie campaign manager Corry Bliss said. “This is just more confirmation of the support we’re receiving.”

Campaign Season Heats up in California

From Daily Democrat:

Down-ticket races like the lieutenant governor’s battle between San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and former state Sen. Abel Maldonado, California’s highest-ranking Republican Latino, might also attract national attention. Even in San Jose, if the stars align and Major League Baseball waves everyone home, voters may be asked to bless a long-awaited A’s stadium.

Whew. Got all that?

After a campaign season that saw a jaw-dropping $150 million-plus spent on political campaigns, this next round may make that look like so many couch coins.

“It’s quite possible we’ll see financial campaign spending records shattered,” said Jude Barry, a Democratic consultant who ran Steve Westly’s failed 2006 gubernatorial

Lieutenant Governor Candidates Meet in Alaska

From JuneauEmpire.com:

Though many Alaskans may not know the duties of the lieutenant governor, the importance of the post was reinforced last summer when Gov. Sarah Palin resigned and then-Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell replaced her.

Three Republicans seeking to fill Parnell’s old post met Tuesday in Fairbanks. Eddie Burke, Jay Ramras and Mead Treadwell highlighted differences in personalities, backgrounds and visions during the hour-long forum.

Burke, a former radio host, presented conservative positions on firearms and abortion and criticized the $8 billion state budget approved by Ramras and other state lawmakers.

Ramras said the lieutenant governor’s office represents an underused bully pulpit in a state thirsty for new investment. Treadwell, meanwhile, said state officials must focus on refilling the trans-Alaska oil pipeline and the construction of a natural gas pipeline.

Republicans Get Candidates in California

From LA Times:

Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley convincingly won the GOP primary for attorney general on Tuesday, giving Republicans a strong chance at capturing the state’s top law enforcement job in the November contest.

His San Francisco counterpart, Dist. Atty. Kamala Harris, appeared to overcome an aggressive — and expensive — challenge in the Democratic primary as she seeks to become the first woman, first Asian and first African American to serve as attorney general. Harris claimed victory late Tuesday, though her nearest rival had yet to concede. Former Los Angeles City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo was running well behind in a crowded field.

Cooley, a political moderate who has won three district attorney elections in heavily Democratic Los Angeles County, was leading despite a bruising primary battle in which his two GOP rivals unsuccessfully attempted to portray him as being too liberal for the Republican faithful.
