Republicans Make History in New Mexico

From the Wall Street Journal:

Lots of people want to talk about the historic nature of yesterday’s primary results for New Mexico governor. By easily winning their respective nominations last night, Democratic Lt. Gov Diane Denish and GOP prosecutor Susana Martinez have set up only the third woman-against-woman general election race for governor in history. Republicans also made history by nominating an all-Hispanic ticket, with John Sanchez, the party’s 2002 candidate for governor, joining Ms. Martinez as her running-mate for lieutenant governor.

But Ms. Martinez says she isn’t interested in talking about the historic nature of her bid, but rather in cleaning up a corrupt state. New Mexico’s image has only gotten worse in recent following the federal investigations of outgoing Governor Bill Richardson, who last year was forced to step aside as President Obama’s choice for commerce secretary over ethics controversies.

SD: Lt. Governor Leads Fundraising in Governor’s Race

From Rapid City Journal:

In a race defined early on by money raised, Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard heads a pack of five GOP candidates into the final nine days of a gubernatorial primary campaign he has led from the start.

Daugaard raised about $400,000 in 2007, before any of the other four candidates had even filed papers to officially begin their campaigns. He raised another $500,000 in 2008 and $750,000 in 2009.

That is a substantial take for a South Dakota governor’s race leading up to the election year. It more than doubled the $700,000 raised by the end of 2009 by state Sen. Dave Knudson, R-Sioux Falls, and is even farther ahead of the other three candidates — state Sen. Gordon Howie, R-Rapid City, rancher Ken Knuppe of Buffalo Gap and former Brookings Mayor Scott Munsterman.

Much of the lieutenant governor’s funding has come from prominent Republicans, including cabinet members, who had also donated to Gov. Mike Rounds. The governor added weight to the cash connection with his endorsement of his lieutenant governor, whom Rounds predicted as his successor in casual comments to a Rapid City Journal reporter three years ago.

KS: Republican Lt. Governor Candidate Picked

From kcstar.com:

Republican Sam Brownback tapped state Senator Jeff Colyer Tuesday as his running mate in his bid to be Kansas’ next governor.

Colyer, an Overland Park surgeon is a conservative Republican who served a term in the state House before joining the Senate in 2009.

The pick defied predictions from some that Brownback would pick a moderate to balance his own conservative credentials, or that he’d pick the leader of a Kansas business. Brownback said he picked Colyer because of his intelligence, his medical background, his compassion and his dedication to Kansas.

VT: Lt. Governor Speaks about Agenda for Next Governor

From BurlingtonFreePress.com:

Speakers before and after Brian Dubie’s keynote address at the Vermont Tiger Symposium on Tuesday suggested the next governor of Vermont faces high fiscal hurdles.

Dubie, Republican lieutenant governor for the past eight years, wants to be Vermont’s next governor despite the looming financial problems — as do five Democrats. While the Democratic rivals crisscross the state for debates, Dubie has skipped those appearances to tour businesses and knock on doors — and speak to selected audiences.

“The state does face some daunting challenges,” Art Woolf, a University of Vermont economist, said in brief remarks to set the stage for Dubie’s presentation to a pro-economic growth audience of about 125. “We have managed to slip through by the skin of our teeth. It gets harder and harder each year.”

NV: Lt. Governor Hopefuls tout themselves

From Review Journal:

International savoir-faire was part of the Russian immigrant’s pitch.

And the connections to deliver the goods is what the political scion of a Northern Nevada family said is important.

Each was talking about what qualities matter most in a candidate for lieutenant governor. But only one will be nominated for the job by Democratic voters.

On Thursday the candidates debated one last time before the start of early voting in the primary election that concludes June 8.

“I’m as serious as anybody about doing the job,” said candidate Robert Goodman, who referred to his itinerant upbringing by parents who worked for a circus. “But I do not want to be involved in the politics.”

NY: Republican Governor Candidate Picks his Lt. Governor

From the Buffalo News:

Rick Lazio has looked westward for a running mate, choosing Chautauqua County Executive Greg Edwards as his candidate for lieutenant governor should he win the Republican gubernatorial nomination.

A Lazio source said this afternoon the campaign has settled on the second-term county leader as a “perfect fit; someone who is smart and committed to economic development, especially upstate.”

“He’s uniquely qualified to be lieutenant governor,” the source said. “We’ve seen a parade of people who haven’t been up to the job of serving in higher office, and New Yorkers can trust that in Greg Edwards — they have someone who is.”
