Despite incorrect Internet speculation to the contrary, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz is not dropping out of the race for attorney general.
Instead, she is holding a press conference Thursday morning with one of the top lawyers in the state, Wesley Horton.
Bysiewicz will be seeking a legal ruling in state Superior Court in Hartford over whether she has the requisite 10 years of active legal practice in Connecticut, which is the legal requirement to become attorney general.
Horton, who is known for the famous Horton vs. Meskill public school funding case, will host the press conference at his Hartford office – and will be joined by the state Democratic Party chairwoman, Nancy DiNardo.

CT: Two Dem Rivals Criticize Secretary of States Use of Database
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 03:18 Written by rslcpol Friday, 12 February 2010 02:49
From Courant.com:
Two rivals of Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz in the campaign for the Democratic nomination for attorney general raised questions Thursday about her use of an internal database from her office to send thousands of e-mails soliciting political support and campaign contributions.
Bysiewicz’s two Democratic opponents — former state Senate Majority Leader George Jepsen and state Rep. Cameron Staples — both commented on a Sunday Courant story about Bysiewicz’s use of a database, assembled by her office, of 36,000 constituents’ names, including about 9,900 e-mail addresses. In the past year her campaign committee sent thousands of e-mails to people in the database soliciting political support and campaign contributions.

Dem Secretary of State Investigated for Using Taxpayer Funded Database for Campaign
Last Updated on Monday, 8 February 2010 12:13 Written by rslcpol Monday, 8 February 2010 12:13
From The Middletown Press:
Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz, of Middletown, is under fire for using a database of citizens’ names to send out unsoliticed e-mails seeking campaign contributions, according to the Hartford Courant.
Bysiewicz, a Democrat, is running for attorney general. Current Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is now investigating her actions.
The database of citizens’ names was assembled at taxpayers’ expense by her office, according to the Hartford Courant. She allegedly used the database to promoted her candidacy.
A Republican political activist who received unwanted Bysiewicz campaign e-mails lodged a complaint last October against Bysiewicz, charging she was misusing “official state data for a political campaign,” according to the Hartford Courant.

Skepticism Surrounds Democrat Secretary of State Candidate
Last Updated on Thursday, 4 February 2010 02:31 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 4 February 2010 02:31
From MLive.com:
If Winfrey plans to use some of the same techniques implemented in Detroit’s government on a statewide level, then those last two initiatives are key for anybody who’s ever had to visit a Secretary of State branch office. After all, who doesn’t hate long lines for something as simple as renewing your tags?
Negative perceptions of Detroit politicians, however, could harm Winfrey in the long run if she doesn’t work quickly to distance herself from her former co-workers — including former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and former city councilwoman Monica Conyers, both of whom have fell victim to corruption.
“Ask some one who has ever dealt with Detroit city hall/clerk before you jump on that bandwagon,” writes one commenter here on MLive.

Arizona Democrat Announces Bid for Secretary of State
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 03:40 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:47
From The Herald:
A former state real estate commissioner launched his bid Tuesday to become Arizona’s next secretary of state.
Democrat Sam Wercinski pointed out the post is the state’s top election official. He said more can be done to educate voters to ensure that all ballots are counted and are not disqualified because people did not bring the proper identification or even did not show up at the right polling place.
But the central issue in the race is likely to be who voters believe is most qualified to be governor.

Two other Republicans — Cheryl Denise Allen of Martinsville and Mark Seitz of Indianapolis — also have filed their candidacies.
But the race is quickly shaping up to be a contest between Rokita, who brings two terms as the high-profile head of the state’s top elections office, and Hershman, who is a close aide to Buyer and has his backing.
