Ohio Democrat Gets into Secretary of State Race

From The Columbus Dispatch:

Franklin County Clerk of Courts Maryellen O’Shaughnessy made it (sort of) official today, jumping into the Ohio secretary of state’s race.

O’Shaughnessy, who has a mixed campaign record, winning city council and county clerk seats, but losing bids for county commissioner and U.S. representative, said she was honored by the support from fellow Democrats, particularly Gov. Ted Strickland and party Chairman Chris Redfern.

State Rep. Jennifer Garrison, a Marietta Democrat, had been running for secretary of state since August, but she officially dropped out of the race on Saturday after Strickland decided to back O’Shaughnessy.

From TheHour.com:

Democrat Andrew S. Garfunkel thinks 10 years as Norwalk’s town clerk make him the perfect candidate to replace Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz.

Garfunkel has filed paperwork to form a campaign to seek the office Bysiewicz will vacate to seek the Attorney General’s office.

“Sometimes the door opens and you have to take the chance,” said Garfunkel, 47, while at a Democratic rally Sunday night in Norwalk. “I am very familiar with the duties of the office… I will go into it full force and wholeheartily.”

Ohio Dems Might Switch Their Pick for Secretary of State

From Dispatch Politics:

A bit more than nine months before the November election, Ohio Democrats appear ready to make a change in their candidate for secretary of state.

State Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern said yesterday that the party will have an announcement next week regarding its candidate. State Rep. Jennifer Garrison of Marietta has been running for the seat since August.

But sources said that Garrison has drawn strong opposition from the party’s progressive base for her conservative stands on social issues and that leaders, including Gov. Ted Strickland, are prepared to embrace Franklin County Clerk of Courts Maryellen O’Shaughnessy for secretary of state.

He said he and his wife “still think and pray about how we can best serve Indiana in the future.”

CT: Secretary of State – and AG Candidate – Has New Issues to Explain

From Courant.com:

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz, currently a candidate for state attorney general, has submitted a personal check for $55 to the state’s judicial department to rectify an error she says she made in 2006 – when she obtained a 50-percent exemption from a $110-a-year professional fee by filing a form saying that she didn’t practice law as an occupation.

But Bysiewicz’s effort this week to shed that political embarassment has left her with additional issues to explain:

–Newly surfaced judicial department records show that she didn’t just file for the exemption in 2006, but also did it in 2007 and 2008 by signing identical statements that she didn’t practice law “as an occupation” in those years, either. However, she wrote a letter to the judicial department Monday – which was released to The Courant Tuesday – in which she asked that all three filings be disregarded.

GILLESPIE NAMED RSLC CHAIRMAN, REYNOLDS VICE CHAIRMAN

– WILL PROVIDE STRATEGIC GUIDANCE, ASSIST 2010 POLITICAL REDISTRICTING EFFORT –

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Heading into a pivotal year for Republicans at all levels of government, Ed Gillespie, former Republican National Committee Chairman and Counselor to the President, has been named Chairman of the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC). The RSLC is the nation’s largest caucus of Republican state leaders – focused on electing Republican Attorneys General, Lieutenant Governors, Secretaries of State and state legislators. Gillespie will provide strategic guidance on political and communication activities – with a particular focus on 2010 political redistricting efforts. In addition, former NY Congressman and National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman (NRCC) Tom Reynolds – who also served in the NY State Assembly – will serve as Vice Chairman and lead the redistricting effort.

“There is a great deal of momentum for Republicans this election year, but momentum alone will not guarantee success. We are looking at every opportunity to increase and obtain legislative majorities – and Ed Gillespie’s record of winning will help our winning cause,” said Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) President Scott Ward. “There is a lot at stake this year because state elections will determine who draws state legislative and Congressional district boundaries after completion of the 2010 census. These elections will help shape the political landscape for the next decade and we are fortunate to have Ed’s steady leadership guiding us through this election year.”

CT: Secretary of State Wants to Know if She Qualifies to Run for Attorney General

From Capitol Watch:

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz Wednesday followed through with her intention, stated last week, to formally request a legal opinion from state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal as to whether she meets the state’s statutory qualifications to run for attorney general herself.

Her request fuels an existing controversy over whether she has accumulated “at least 10 years’ active practice at the bar of this state” – which is what state law requires Connecticut’s attorney general to have. The controversy erupted last week, almost as soon as Bysiewicz declared her candidacy for attorney general – the office to which Blumenthal is not seeking re-election as he runs for the U.S. Senate.

CT: Dem AG Candidate Still Hasn’t Sought Opinion of her Eligibility

From Capitol Watch:

As of Tuesday afternoon, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz still had not given Attorney General Richard Blumenthal the formal request that she vowed last week to submit, seeking his legal opinion on whether she qualifies as a candidate for attorney general. But, about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, a spokeswoman for her campaign said that Bysiewicz would submit a formal letter sometime Wednesday.

Campaign spokeswoman Tanya Meck said Bysiewicz is still working on the request but “the plan is to get it to [Blumenthal]” by Wednesday.

One question being asked around the Capitol in recent days has been whether she would formally request the opinion by using her official position as secretary of the state – or if she would simply ask in her role as a candidate for office. Meck said Tuesday it will be the former – in her official capacity.

LA: Secretary of State Stays Out of Senate Race

From The Times-Picayune:

Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne announced Tuesday that he will not challenge fellow Republican David Vitter in the U.S. Senate race, sparing the incumbent what could have been an expensive primary battle.

Dardenne had been mulling the race for months and said he received encouragement from supporters, but decided recently that “my service to Louisiana is best from Baton Rouge, not from Washington.”

The news came on the same day as a new independent poll showing Vitter with an 18-point lead, his largest to date, over the presumptive Democratic nominee, U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon, of Napoleonville. The telephone survey of 500 likely voters by Rasmussen Reports showed Vitter with a 53 percent to 35 percent margin over Melancon, with 8 percent undecided and 4 percent preferring another candidate. The margin of error is 4.5 percent.
