As expected, Democratic Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz Wednesday announced she is running for attorney general, but she failed to pledge to serve a full term if elected.

One of the biggest supporters of the state’s new public financing system, Bysiewicz also said the program is “in great jeopardy,” and she was going to depend on private fundraising to run her new campaign.

She now can transfer to a candidate committee for attorney general the $467,367 she has raised as part of an exploratory committee for governor, and take contributions of up to $2,000 from individuals, as opposed to the $375 previous limit.

Hawaii Lt. Governor Wants a Secretary of State

From honoluluadvertiser.com:

Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona yesterday said he wants state lawmakers to put a constitutional amendment on the November ballot to establish a nonpartisan, elected secretary of state to administer elections.

Aiona would eliminate the state’s chief elections officer and repeal the powers of the state Elections Commission, giving the elected secretary of state the authority to oversee the state Office of Elections.

Most states have elected or appointed secretaries of state to handle a variety of administrative tasks, while lieutenant governors perform some of those functions in Hawai’i, Alaska and Utah.

NJ: Lt. Governor will also be Secretary of State

From philly.com:

Lt. Gov.-elect Kim Guadagno also will serve as New Jersey’s next secretary of state, Gov.-elect Christopher J. Christie said yesterday.

The job will give Guadagno – the state’s first lieutenant governor – the secretary’s traditional responsibilities overseeing elections and promoting historical and cultural programs and tourism. In addition, Christie has asked Guadagno to lead a “red-tape review” committee to eliminate bureaucratic obstacles to developing business in the state. She also will head a New Jersey Partnership for Action to help attract and retain businesses.

The role Guadagno carves out could determine how the position fits into state government. The only clearly defined responsibility when the lieutenant governor post was established was to be ready to serve if the governor is unavailable, a relatively common occurrence in recent New Jersey history.

CO: Why the Secretary of State Race Matters

From the Examiner:

In 2006, the Democrats, Moveon.org and George Soros were pissed. Not only had George W. Bush survived his 2000 election, but he won reelection in 2004 handily. The most galling part of the 2004 election for the Dems was the state of Ohio. Ohio’s Republican Secretary of State had not only kept out questionable ballots that would have benefitted the Dems, but the Secretary allowed in ballots for Bush that seemed unkosher to the lefties. Bush carried Ohio and got 4 more years. What to do? What to do?

The next election cycle, in 2006, saw the Lefties’ creation of the Secretary of State Project or SoSP for short. The SoSP Project was co-founded in July 2006 by James Rucker, formerly director of grassroots mobilization for MoveOn.org Political Action and Moveon.org Civic Action. During a panel discussion at the Democratic Party’s convention last year, we learned that the Democracy Alliance, a financial clearinghouse created by Billionaire George Soros and Progressive Insurance magnate Peter B. Lewis, approved the Secretary of State Project as a grantee. This means the SoSP Project is effectively funded by Soros and Lewis.
