Court Reverses Democrat SoS Brunner’s Decision on Republicans Residency

From Dayton Business Journal:

The dispute had taken on political significance as Husted is running for the GOP slot in the secretary of state race next year. Brunner isn’t going for another term as she seeks the U.S. Senate seat to be vacated by Republican George Voinovich.

The Supreme Court writ was joined by all seven justices, although Justice Paul Pfeifer concurred in judgment only and entered a separate opinion.

In reversing Brunner’s decision, the court wrote that the Montgomery County elections board didn’t follow procedure in moving to cancel Husted’s registration and also disagreed with Brunner on the role the residency of Husted’s family played in her decision.

Ohio Democrat Secretary of State’s Decision Should Make Her Blush

From Cleveland.com:

It’s not news that Ohio election law operates on a partisan basis, with county boards of election evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats and a partisan, elected secretary of state holding the uncomfortable role of tie-breaker.

But Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner’s ruling this week that Republican State Sen. Jon Husted does not reside in the Dayton-area district he represents is more than that. It’s a perfect storm of political partisanship masquerading as governance.

It’s also, of course, a complete coincidence that Brunner’s ruling could be used to embarrass Husted, who wants to succeed her as Ohio’s next secretary of state. (Brunner is running for the U.S. Senate.)

Brunner’s ruling breaks an equally partisan elections board deadlock in Montgomery County.

MT: Former Secretary of State Mulls Bid for Public Service Commission Seat

From Missoulian:

Former Montana Secretary of State Brad Johnson, a Republican who lost his 2008 re-election race for that post, said Tuesday he’s “seriously considering” whether to run in 2010 for the Public Service Commission seat currently held by Democrat Ken Toole of Helena.

“I’m not ready to leave public service,” Johnson said in an interview. “I think that’s a place where I could make a real contribution.”

The five-member PSC regulates public utilities in the state, such as electric, gas and water companies.

Toole won a narrow race in 2006 against Republican Mike Taylor to win the PSC seat in District 5, which covers Flathead, Lake, Lewis and Clark, Glacier, Pondera and Teton counties. It includes the cities of Helena, Kalispell and Polson.

RSLC: BATTLEGROUND VIRGINIA

For IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 14, 2009

PressReleaseLOGO

– RSLC CONTRIBUTING NEARLY $250,000 TO VIRGINIA ELECTIONS –

ALEXANDRIA, VA – With the Virginia campaigns in full swing, the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC), the nation’s largest caucus of Republican state leaders, today contributed over $90,000 to the Republican Party of Virginia and Dr. Chris Stolle, candidate for the 83rd House District.  This brings the total contributions for the RSLC in Virginia to nearly $250,000 so far this election cycle.

“Virginians have had enough of the overreaching of the Democratic policies coming out of Washington.  Individuals want government leaders who will get the economy back on track by limiting spending and proposing commonsense, conservative solutions to the issues we are facing today,” said Scott Ward, President of the Republican State Leadership Committee.  “We believe that the Republican candidates are well-positioned for victory in November because they understand the private sector, not the public sector, will create the road to recovery and keep Virginia competitive.”

Indiana: Secretary of State Rokita Pitches Politics Free Redistricting

From FortWayne.com:

Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita pitched a plan Tuesday that would make it illegal for lawmakers to consider political data when redrawing congressional and legislative district maps.

Rokita wants districts to follow county or township lines as much as possible so they are not divided. He says the plan would result in more fairly drawn, competitive districts.

His proposal has drawn praise from Gov. Mitch Daniels, a fellow Republican, but two top GOP lawmakers said it is not Rokita’s job to interfere with a process that belongs in the hands of the General Assembly.
