Ohio: Election Panel Waiting on Brunner Request

From Columbus Dispatch:

Wednesday will be one month since Jennifer Brunner’s U.S. Senate campaign said it was “promptly” resolving any outstanding issues preventing the consideration of her request for a federal opinion on the use of certain campaign funds.

The request languishes, and the campaign isn’t answering questions.

Brunner’s campaign sent a letter June 11 asking the Federal Elections Commission to determine the legality of an agreement designed to allow her U.S. Senate campaign to use about $15,000 worth of equipment bought with state campaign funds, which normally is prohibited.

AZ: Brewer Eyes 2010 Race for Governor

From the Arizona Republic:

Gov. Jan Brewer on Thursday told The Arizona Republic that she’s “leaning” toward seeking a full term as governor next year, the clearest indication to date of her campaign plans.

The Republican’s statement goes a long way toward answering one of the biggest questions in Arizona politics leading up to the 2010 election. It also appears aimed at sending a signal to members of her own party who – some openly and some not – have been weighing gubernatorial campaigns of their own.

“I’m leaning in that direction, towards running,” Brewer said during an hourlong interview Thursday. “I know the amount of commitment, the amount of time that it takes.”

Grayson will face Bowling Green eye surgeon Rand Paul and Elkton businessman Bill Johnson in the Republican primary next year.

OH: Secretary of State Candidate Challenges Campaign Fundraising Law

From Dispatch Politics:

Ohio has a law that says if candidates use more than $100,000 in personal funds for a campaign, their opponents have the option of exceeding state contribution caps and raising unlimited amounts from donors.

Sandra O’Brien, a Republican candidate for Ohio secretary of state, says that law is unconstitutional, and a federal judge appears inclined to agree.

O’Brien filed a lawsuit Thursday seeking to prevent Sen. Jon Husted, her opponent in the May 2010 GOP primary, from filing a “declaration of no limits” because she intends to use personal money in the race.

Judge Edmund A. Sargus Jr. of U.S. District Court in Columbus approved a temporary order to block any such filing and said in a court order that O’Brien “has shown that there is a substantial question of the constitutionality” of the law.

The Reshaping of the GOP

From the Christian Science Monitor:

There’s a slight spring in the step of Republicans these days. President Obama is stumbling on health reform and his job approval rating is sinking. Suddenly, life in the wilderness doesn’t look so bleak to a GOP that got trounced in the last two elections and was, to some, staring possible extinction in the face.

The party could well take two key governorships – New Jersey and Virginia – away from the Democrats in November.

Recruiting for next year’s House, Senate, and gubernatorial races has gotten easier, in anticipation of midterm elections that historically favor the out-of-power party.

NM: Former Democrat Secretary of State Faces 50 Felony Counts

From Santa Fe New Mexican:

Former Secretary of State Rebecca Vigil-Giron is facing 50 felony counts of fraud, money laundering, tax evasion, creating false documents and soliciting or receiving kickbacks in a case involving millions of dollars in federal election funds.

A state grand jury in Albuquerque on Wednesday indicted Vigil-Giron, political consultant Armando Gutierrez, and lobbyists Joe and Elizabeth Kupfer in the case. Gutierrez and both Kupfers also face 50 felony counts each.

Gutierrez is a consultant who has produced Spanish-language ads for former President Clinton’s 1996 campaign and Al Gore’s 2000 presidential race. He also worked on Gov. Bill Richardson’s 2002 gubernatorial campaign. The Kupfers are lobbyists for the city of Albuquerque and other clients.

WI: Expect Many Runners in Governor Race

From WBAY.com:

On the Republican side, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and former U.S. Representative Mark Neumann have already officially made their bid, as well as Appleton resident Mark Todd, Bill Ingram, and John Schiess.

But what could become a major game-changer on the GOP ticket is if former governor Tommy Thompson decides to run again. Thompson and a former aide tell the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel they’re both considering a run.

If you think the list is convoluted now, just wait.

“We’re going to have many more people running for governor a month from now,” Dale said.

OH: Stampeding for Secretary of State

From Cleveland.com:

Whoever wins the job owns a seat on Ohio’s Apportionment Board, along with Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland and GOP State Auditor Mary Taylor. Two other members, one per party as picked by legislative leaders, cancel each other out.

Republicans in the hunt to become the next secretary of state are state Sen. Jon Husted of suburban Dayton and former Ashtabula County Auditor Sandra O’Brien.

Husted, formerly speaker of the Ohio House, has by far the stronger pedigree; O’Brien, however, is likely to be seen as more conservative, and that can be important in Ohio GOP primaries.
