Ohio: Husted Testifies for Redistricting Plan
Last Updated on Wednesday, 22 April 2009 12:23 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 22 April 2009 12:23
From Dayton Daily News:
Sen. Jon Husted, R-Kettering, on Tuesday, April 21, gave the first testimony supporting his plan to change the way Ohio draws state legislative and congressional districts.
“I am presenting to you a proposal that would end the partisan gerrymandering of legislative and congressional districts that allows the politicians to pick the voters rather than allowing the voters to pick their public officials,” Husted said in testimony prepared for the Senate State and Local Government and Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
Senate Joint Resolution 5 would establish a bipartisan, seven-member commission to oversee the creation of the districts after each census. Husted wants the legislature to put the proposal before voters in November.

From Cleveland.com:
Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner trails her Democratic rival in fund-raising in their battle to become the party’s nominee for the U.S. Senate next year.
Brunner reported on Wednesday that she raised $207,000 in the first six weeks of her campaign, as expected far less than the more than $1 million raised by Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher.
Candidates seeking to replace retiring Republican Sen. George Voinovich were required to file their first-quarter campaign reports with the Federal Elections Commission.

TN: Secretary of State Hargett Removes Roadblock
Last Updated on Thursday, 9 April 2009 03:20 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 9 April 2009 03:20
From Nashville Post Politics:
Secretary of State Tre Hargett has apparently stepped in and removed a potential roadblock to the passage of SJR127, the constitutional amendment which would allow the legislature more power to regulate abortions in Tennessee.
In a memo obtained by NashvillePost.com addressed to leaders in both parties and both chambers of the legislature, Secretary of State Tre Hargett states that his office will fund the constitutionally mandated printed public notification required of all constitutional amendments (at an estimated cost of $20,000) regardless of whether a traditional appropriation is provided for in the budget.

Memo to Virginia Reporters on RSLC and 527 Financial Disclosures
Last Updated on Wednesday, 8 April 2009 02:24 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 8 April 2009 01:14
For IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 8, 2009
TO: Virginia Reporters
FROM: Carrie Cantrell
Director of Communications, Republican State Leadership Committee
DATE: Wednesday, April 8, 2009
RE: RSLC and 527 Financial Disclosures
As you know, a new group “Common Sense Virginia” has been established to attack former Republican Attorney General Bob McDonnell in his campaign for Governor. As a result, 527s and the involvement of the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) in the 2005 Virginia Attorney General race have subsequently been mentioned in two recent articles. It is important for you to understand our organization, how we report, the reforms we have supported, and the steps we have taken to be as transparent as possible.
Since 2002, the RSLC has been active in down-ballot races for Attorneys General, and has grown to include legislators, Lieutenant Governors and Secretaries of State. Unlike other 527 organizations that set up just for one election, we are a professionally run organization focused on making a national impact one state at a time through helping to increase the number of Republicans in these offices – building a farm team for the future.
Alabama Secretary of State to seek Re-Election
Last Updated on Tuesday, 7 April 2009 11:04 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 7 April 2009 10:52
Alabama has been very well served by Republican Secretary of State Beth Chapman. Her record is outstanding, and we predict Alabama voters will reward her with another term as Secretary of State. From Montgomery Advertiser:
Secretary of State Beth Chapman announced Monday, her 47th birthday, that she will run for re-election as the state’s chief election official in 2010.
Chapman, a Republican, had discussed the possibility of running for other offices including lieutenant governor. Democratic Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom Jr., announced last week he was running for re- election and not running for governor.
She said she decided to run again for secretary of state because of her staff and because of her passion “for what we do every day” to help people vote and to help the businesses that interact with her office.

SD: Senator Seeks Secretary of State Office
Last Updated on Friday, 3 April 2009 02:10 Written by rslcpol Friday, 3 April 2009 10:36
Secretary of State elections will be in focus in 2010. We mentioned the Ohio race yesterday, and will be touching on others in the months ahead. There are over 2 dozen elected Secretaries of State offices up for election in 2010. The left has at least two big time efforts already underway to try and buy these undervalued, and often looked over offices. The RSLC is fighting back – join us!
From the Argus Leader:
During state Sen. Jason Gant’s time in the Legislature, he has developed an interest in election issues, a topic that now has led him to run for secretary of state.
Gant, a 32-year-old Sioux Falls Republican, is concluding his third term in the Senate, where he represents Minnehaha and Lincoln counties.
Anyone paying close attention to his legislative work likely would have a good sense of his interest in issues important to the secretary of state’s job, issues such as campaign finance and corporate filings.
Gant says there are other responsibilities that must be adhered to, including preserving the “integrity in elections, creating awareness and importance of each vote being counted, stressing the importance of open government to get more information to the public and keeping costs low.”

Last Updated on Friday, 3 April 2009 10:14 Written by rslcpol Friday, 3 April 2009 10:14
From Dispatch Politics:
Former Republican House Speaker Jon Husted officially announced his candidacy yesterday for Ohio secretary of state next year with a promise to change the job he’s seeking.
“I may be the first person in Ohio history to run for an office with a plan to eliminate it,” Husted, now a state senator from Kettering, said in announcing his candidacy at Ohio Republican headquarters.
Husted, 41, said he wants a “bipartisan decision-making process leading to nonpartisan outcomes.” He plans to spend the next year developing a model by talking with local elections officials and studying approaches in other states.

State Senator Husted to Announce Run for Secretary of State
Last Updated on Thursday, 2 April 2009 01:33 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 2 April 2009 01:21
Jon Husted’s presence in this race will no doubt get Ohio Democrats very worked up. What’s more, we predict the race for this office will attract truck loads of money from various out of state Democrat and Progressive (the really liberal Democrats) groups. Stay very tuned. From Chillicothe:
State Sen. Jon Husted says he wants the job of Ohio’s top elections official so he can eliminate the need for it.
The 41-year-old Republican from the Dayton area plans to announce Thursday that he’ll run for Ohio secretary of state in 2010. But Husted tells the Dayton Daily News that his eventual goal is to replace the state’s current election oversight with a bipartisan, seven-member panel.
Incumbent Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has already launched a campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2010.

Secretary of State’s Bills Advance Through State Legislature
Last Updated on Wednesday, 1 April 2009 10:49 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 1 April 2009 10:49
From Secretary of State Sam Reed:
Some key parts of Secretary of State Sam Reed’s legislative package remain alive as the state Legislature’s 2009 session has reached another deadline.
“I’m pleased that several of our bills are continuing to move through the legislative process this year,” said Secretary of State Sam Reed. “These bills cover areas ranging from elections to donating flags to our military soldiers, to naming rights for the Washington State Heritage Center. I appreciate the hard work by those legislators who have sponsored and shepherded our proposals.”
Monday was the last day for bills to clear policy committees in the house opposite where they originated. Budget-related bills face an April 6 cutoff to be approved by their assigned budget panel in the opposite chamber.

Republican in Ohio Unveils new Redistricting Plan
Last Updated on Tuesday, 31 March 2009 11:57 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 31 March 2009 10:21
This will completely change the face of Congressional redistricting in Ohio. It’ll be interesting to see who, or what, comes out in opposition to this effort. From Journal News:
Sen. Jon Husted, R-Kettering, wants Ohio voters on Nov. 3 to have a chance to change the way the state draws state legislative and congressional districts.
Husted on Monday, March 30, said he would introduce a resolution to establish a bipartisan seven-member commission to oversee the creation of the districts after each census. The next census is in 2010.
The resolution would require a five-vote super majority for the adoption of a redistricting plan.
