MI: 3 Republicans Lead Dem Lt. Governor is Governor’s Race

From Freep.com:

A trio of potential Republican candidates for governor in 2010 show surprising strength against the leading Democratic candidate, Lt. Gov. John Cherry, according to a poll commissioned by the newsletter Inside Michigan Politics.

In head-to-head races with Cherry, Attorney General Mike Cox led 41%-34%, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land led 39%-34% and Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson led 38%-34%, the poll by Marketing Resource Group found.

MI: Panel Recommends Paycut for Politicians

From Examiner.com:

The governor’s $177,000 salary, third-most among governors, would be $159,300 – though Gov. Jennifer Granholm already is voluntarily giving back 10 percent of her pay this year. She returned 10 percent to the state treasury in her first year in office and 5 percent every year after.

“At a time when we are asking state employees to sacrifice, yet again, it is only fair that we lead by example,” the Democratic governor said in a statement.

She said she is disappointed the changes cannot take effect until the next term begins in 2011 – because of the process outlined in the Michigan Constitution – but she encouraged other officials to voluntarily give back some of their salary.

GA: Former State Senator Brian Kemp Running for Secretary of State

From blog.onlineathens.com:

Former Athens state Sen. Brian Kemp made it official today, filing paperwork to run for secretary of state.

A few rumors have circulated about potential opponents in the GOP primary, but Kemp so far is the lone candidate in the race. He’s already gathered more than 60 endorsements and can now start raising money, so he’s got a nice jump on anyone who might run against him.

Kemp also staked out a couple of smart policy positions – though it’s early, so details are sketchy – when I talked to him on the phone this afternoon.

OH: Republican O’Brien Intends to Run for Secretary of State

From Columbus Dispatch:

Sandra O’Brien, the Republican nominee for state treasurer in 2006, is telling party activists that she intends to run for secretary of state next year.

O’Brien, 57, a former three-term Ashtabula County auditor, was defeated by 12 points in the 2006 race by Democrat Richard Cordray, who is now the Ohio attorney general. Earlier that year, she upset the incumbent treasurer, Jennette Bradley, in the GOP primary election.

Michigan Secretary of State to Run for GOP Nominantion for Governor

This’ll be a busy race for Republican state leaders in Michigan.  In addition to Terri Lynn Land, Republican A.G. Mike Cox and Republican State Senator Tom George have thrown their names into the mix.  Oh, and yes this creates some openings for S.O.S. and A.G. in Michigan in 2010 as well.  You talk about making the case for supporting the RSLC – these three folks are it!  From The Hill’s Blog Briefing Room:

Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land will run for governor in 2010, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Land will file paperwork to lay groundwork for her run today, the paper reported, and will speak at a state meeting of Republicans this weekend.

Land joins a growing field of Republicans hoping to pick up the Michigan governorship, where two-term Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D) is prohibited from running again.

From the Columbus Dispatch:

A high-stakes Democratic showdown is in the offing for 2010 after yesterday’s announcements by Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner and Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher that they will seek the party’s nomination to succeed retiring Republican U.S. Sen. George V. Voinovich.

If both candidates stay in the race, Gov. Ted Strickland will be forced to find a new running mate next year and Brunner’s seat on the crucial State Apportionment Board will be left undefended by an incumbent.

NM: Secretary of State Mishandled Election Funds

Nothing beats being “extremely concerned about the financial stability”of a state office.  And no, this has nothing to do with the faltering economy.  The good news is that the Democrat S.O.S. in question is no longer in office.  The better news is that she still has taxpayers paying her salary.  Nothing beats being cute with taxpayer funds intended to help others vote!  This really makes the case for Democrats holding this crucial offices…not!  She ran for the U.S. House in 2008, and this campaign video, when viewed with this new info in mind, is really quite amusing.  Make it last all night!

From the Santa Fe New Mexican:

State Auditor Hector Balderas said Tuesday an audit of the New Mexico Secretary of State’s office found “severe mismanagement” of federal funds and that his office will forward information to the FBI, federal election officials and the state Attorney General’s Office.

Balderas also said he’s “extremely concerned about the financial stability” of the secretary of state’s operations.

New Mexico’s own Mario Burgos gives his perspective on this gem.    Heath Haussamen tells us that the former S.O.S. questions the timing of the release…that’s a nice politicians response.

OH: State Sen. Husted Wants Bipartisan Oversight of Elections; Considers run for SoS

If Republican state senator Jon Husted is able to make this happen in Ohio, you can probably look for a couple of things to happen in the years ahead.  First, expect to see other states adopt these reforms – after all when both the Republican and Democrat state chairmen, for the most part, remained positive (the Ohio Democrat Chairman Chris Redfern couldn’t resist getting one little dig in – way to trip over the partisanship bar there Chris) – as a model of restoring trust and transparency to the political process.  Republicans and Democrats in across the country will be all over this if it shows promise in Ohio.  Second, and this will drive some folks in Ohio plumb nuts who aren’t big Husted fans, Jon Husted may very well be propelled into the top tier political leaders in Ohio…for starters.     From Dispatch Politics:

State Sen. Jon A. Husted wants to eliminate or emasculate the statewide office he might run for next year.

The Kettering Republican said yesterday that he has begun crafting and seeking political support for a November ballot initiative that would remove the secretary of state’s oversight of elections and implement a new system for drawing legislative boundaries every 10 years.

Husted, beginning his first Senate term after serving four years as House speaker, confirmed that he is interested in running in 2010 for secretary of state, the office held by Democrat Jennifer Brunner.

A Caroline Kennedy in Missouri? Democrat Secretary of State Running for Senate

MOSOS_Carnahan

Meet Democrat Secretary of State Robin Carnahan.  She’s running for Senate.  It looks like she’s got one heckuva record to run on.  Not just a familiar name…or maybe just a familiar name.

From Prime Buzz:

“As Secretary of State, she has unobtrusively punched the time clock and accomplished nothing legislatively.  She is best-known for earning judicial rebukes for trying to rig the language of ballot titles. She is an incompetent Secretary of State who consistently chooses politics over people.

“So far, her only major political accomplishment was to run up a large total against a token opponent who spent less than $40,000, in a pro-Democrat year.
