Washington Secretary of State Reed Wants Online Voting

From the News Tribune:

Last year, Washington state residents were able to start registering to vote online. Soon, military and voters abroad might be able to cast their votes the same way.

“This is just the next logical step,” Secretary of State Sam Reed says of his proposal to make it easier for Washingtonians abroad to vote. “I would like to get to the point where we’re able to have them apply to vote online. We would issue them a PIN number and they would be able to vote from anywhere in the world.”

If approved by the Legislature, Reed’s proposal doesn’t lay out a timetable and requires that the Secretary of State’s Office ensure the security and secrecy of the ballots.

Profile of Arizona’s Former Secretary of State and New Governor

From AZStarNet.com:

In fact, Arizona’s new governor is such a fan of the Swedish pop group that she considered having the classic “Take a Chance on Me” played at her inauguration.

“I can do it! I can do it!” she said while bursting into laughter during an interview Friday in her old office at the state Capitol, days before she was sworn in.

Now, as Brewer takes over the Governor’s Office by way of Napolitano’s resignation, the 64-year-old Republican is cognizant of the fact that life will change. It already has.

– Republican Secretary of State Brewer Becomes Arizona Governor, Napolitano Named Homeland Security Secretary –

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC), the nation’s largest caucus of Republican state leaders, congratulated Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer as she takes the post of Governor. Brewer was named Governor as Democrat Governor Janet Napolitano has accepted the position of Homeland Security Secretary in the Obama Administration. Governor Brewer has a 26-year history in state and local government – having served in both chambers of the Arizona legislature, as chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, and most recently as Secretary of State. She is a prime example of the mission of the RSLC – building a farm team for the future.

“The people of Arizona will be well-served with a strong leader in Jan Brewer as their Governor,” said RSLC President Scott Ward. “Throughout her career she has implemented commonsense solutions to fiscal and public safety issues, among others. Jan Brewer is an outstanding, capable individual and we look forward to seeing her further success as Governor.”

AZ: It’s Official – Republican Jan Brewer Becomes Governor

From AZStarnet.com:

You could say the best thing that ever happened to Jan Brewer was fellow Arizona Republican John McCain losing his bid for the presidency.

With President Obama’s inauguration Tuesday and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano’s subsequent confirmation as secretary of homeland security, the dominoes have fallen, landing Secretary of State Brewer in the governor’s seat.

Napolitano’s staff delivered a written, signed resignation letter to Brewer just before 5 p.m. Tuesday.

States Continue Their Spending Sprees

From USA Today:

In Arizona, spending is up 6.6% during the first six months of a budget year that began July 1. That’s on top of a 10.5% increase last year. The state spends an average of $28 million a day while receiving $22 million in revenue, state Treasurer Dean Martin says. “The housing bubble burst in mid-2006 … and the budget keeps growing as if that never happened,” says Martin, who expects to borrow money to pay some bills.

A lot of states “haven’t really ‘fessed up yet in terms of how bad it is,” says National Governors Association executive director Ray Scheppach.

AZ: Secretary of State and Governor-to-be Quiet on her Plans

For those who are curious – the Arizona Secretary of State is first in line of succession should the office of Governor become vacant. Unlike most states, Arizona does not have the office of lieutenant governor.  From Arizona Daily Star:

PHOENIX — Even though Gov. Janet Napolitano was the one on stage Monday outlining what the state’s priorities should be, in many ways all eyes were on Secretary of State Jan Brewer.

It’s assumed Brewer will be governor within days, if Napolitano is confirmed as the new head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

But Brewer gave no indication of her priorities Monday — no reaction to Napolitano’s speech, just a short statement thanking the governor for her service.
