Stateline – States Made History Nov. 4
Last Updated on Monday, 10 November 2008 03:21 Written by rslcpol Monday, 10 November 2008 03:19
From Stateline.org:
Republicans for the first time in history will control both houses in Tennessee and Oklahoma, after both chambers in Tennessee and the lower house in Oklahoma moved into the GOP column. Both states, though, have Democratic governors.
Colorado is poised to become the first state to have black lawmakers leading both legislative chambers.
The Alabama Legislature, in Democratic hands since 1872, continues its streak as the legislature held the longest by either party in any state. Close behind, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi have been under Democratic control for more than a century.

Ohio Dem Secretary of State Linked to ACORN
Last Updated on Monday, 3 November 2008 03:27 Written by rslcpol Monday, 3 November 2008 01:33
From Human Events.com:
The national development director for Project Vote, an affiliated organization of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, has been linked to embattled Ohio Secretary of State, Democrat Jennifer Brunner. Karyn Gillette of Project Vote was a campaign consultant for the Brunner campaign, according to information found in a post made by Rick Brunner on April 11, 2006 on the secretary of state’s own blog.
“Our candidate had gone earlier in the day to have some meetings and work out of Karyn Gillette’s office, but when your correspondent arrived in his S-10 pickup truck, our staff person, Lauren, drove that back to Columbus, while we continued on to dinner with Craig Bashiene and John Lancione. We were accompanied by our consultant, Karyn Gillette. Karyn and her business partner, Mary Grace, have been very helpful to the campaign.”

Dems Hope Secretaries of State Serve as Firewall
Last Updated on Monday, 3 November 2008 01:26 Written by rslcpol Monday, 3 November 2008 01:26
Another reason the Republican State Leadership Committee is so important.
From Politico:
In anticipation of a photo-finish presidential election, Democrats have built an administrative firewall designed to protect their electoral interests in five of the most important battleground states.
The bulwark consists of control of secretary of state offices in five key states — Iowa, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico and Ohio — where the difference between victory and defeat in the 2004 presidential election was no more than 120,000 votes in any one of them.
With a Democrat now in charge of the offices, which oversee and administer their state’s elections, the party is better positioned than in the previous elections to advance traditional Democratic interests —such as increasing voter registration and boosting turnout — rather than Republican priorities such as stamping out voter fraud.

PA: Battle For House Sets Stage for Governor’s Last Two Years
Last Updated on Monday, 3 November 2008 11:38 Written by rslcpol Monday, 3 November 2008 11:24
Really, who knew that victory for the Democrats in Pennsylvania in 2006 would lead so quickly to victory for Republicans in 2008? From PennLive.com:
But his political fitness to press for policies such as greater access to health care for the uninsured and more spending on public schools in the last two years of his term could be seriously affected by the battle for control of the state House of Representatives.
Voters will decide Tuesday if the Democrats can maintain or expand their razor-thin majority in the 203-seat House, or if Republicans can win it back.
Democrats hold a 102-101 edge, and all the seats are up for election. Republicans are hoping to weather a potential Barack Obama storm at the top of the ticket and keep the chamber within striking distance, if not flip it.
Few are more interested in the outcome than Rendell, who has invested heavily in battleground races this year.

It puts a glow on every face
Of the falling angels from the campaign trail

Indiana SoS Seeks Probe of ACORN
Last Updated on Tuesday, 28 October 2008 10:41 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 28 October 2008 10:41
From CNN Political Ticker:
Indiana’s secretary of state has requested a criminal investigation into the embattled community organizing group ACORN, which is accused of submitting hundreds of bogus voter registration forms in northern Lake County.
The request is based on Secretary of State Todd Rokita’s preliminary examination and analysis of 1,438 questionable voter registration applications ACORN submitted in the county, which includes the city of Gary. Rokita, a Republican, has concluded there is “significant, credible evidence” that ACORN violated Indiana and federal law.
“This is a fraud perpetrated on all of the people of Indiana, because fraudulent registrations are the first step in diluting the voice of honest voters and rendering an inaccurate tally on Election Day,” Rokita wrote in his request to state and federal law enforcement officials.

OH: Court Rules Against Dem Secretary of State On Voter Registration; SoS Appeals to US Supreme Court
Last Updated on Thursday, 16 October 2008 01:13 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 16 October 2008 01:13
From Ohio.com:
Ohio’s top elections chief has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in a dispute over whether the state is required to do more to help counties verify voter eligibility, a spokesman for her office said Thursday.
Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, a Democrat, filed an appeal the high court late Wednesday, said spokesman Jeff Ortega.
On Tuesday, the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati sided with the Ohio Republican Party and ordered Brunner to set up a system that provides names of newly registered voters whose driver’s license numbers or Social Security numbers don’t match records in other government databases.
