Indiana: Republican Leads Secretary of State Race

From nwi.com:

A new poll shows Republican Charlie White ahead in the race for Indiana secretary of state despite accusations of voter fraud.

A poll released Wednesday by WISH-TV shows that 39 percent favored White over Democrat Vop Osili, with 29 percent, and Libertarian Mike Wherry, with 5 percent.

Democrats said last week that White committed voter fraud in the May primary by using his ex-wife’s home in Fishers as his address when he didn’t live there. The state Republican Party responded by pointing out irregularities in Osili’s campaign finance reports.

ND: Secretary of State Candidates to Debate

From WDAZ.com:

Republican Secretary of State Al Jaeger, the target of Democratic rival Corey Mock’s allegations that Jaeger is a subpar manager, prepared Wednesday to debate Mock for the first time in their campaign.

Jaeger and Mock, a medical clinic administrator and Democratic state House member from Grand Forks, were scheduled to meet Wednesday night in Bismarck as part of a series of state and local events organized by the League of Women Voters.

Mock has been critical of Jaeger’s office administration, claiming the 18-year incumbent has wasted more than $2 million on an uncompleted office technology project, paid too much overtime to some office employees and made mistakes on election paperwork.

OH: Secretary of State Candidates Say they’ll improve Elections

From the Columbus Dispatch:

Republican Jon Husted said Ohio’s early-voting period creates “incumbent protection” by going on too long, and that the rules need to be uniform so they don’t result in some counties mailing applications while others do not.

Democrat Maryellen O’Shaughnessy said the 35-day early-voting period is allowing more people to vote, but that it might be cut to 21 days to get rid of the controversial “golden week,” a span where people can register and vote on the same day.

“It is important that people have access to the ballot, and this is a good way to do it,” she said of early voting.

In the battle over who will lead Ohio’s election system as the next secretary of state, Husted and O’Shaughnessy met today at the Fawcett Center at Ohio State University in a debate hosted by the Ohio News Network. They were joined by Libertarian Charles Earl.

The two major-party candidates offered few significant disagreements but fired a few shots. O’Shaughnessy criticized Husted’s residency issue – he stays in Upper Arlington but maintains a legal residence near Dayton, an arrangement deemed proper by the Ohio Supreme Court – and questioned whether he was getting undeserved tax breaks. He criticized her vote while on the Columbus City Council to approve a 42 percent pay raise for council members.

As his opponents traded barbs, Earl lamented that political contests have come down to nitpicking. “If you’re going to get into a street fight, for God’s sakes, kneecap ’em. Don’t go around with this Mickey Mouse stuff.”

Earl said he would be the one to keep major-party politics out of Ohio elections.

“I don’t owe either party anything, and they certainly don’t own me,” he said.

CO: Campaign Finance Complaint Filed against Democrat Secretary of State

From AuroraSentinel.com:

A Republican activist filed a complaint against Secretary of State Bernie Buescher, claiming the Democrat broke the law by using state workers to coordinate his campaign for re-election.

The complaint, received by the secretary of state’s office Wednesday, said Buescher used his executive assistant, Heidi Hamilton, on state time for to help manage campaign appearances. Buescher’s calendar shows a meeting April 20 between Faye Diamond, a partner for RBI Strategies & Research, Buescher, Hamilton, and campaign committee member Eleni Albrechta. Denver attorney Robert McGuire, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of Nickelette Bingham-Gullette, said Buescher ordered Hamilton to attend.

“It’s an illegal contribution for a candidate to use state time and office resources,” McGuire said.

All campaign finance complaints must be filed with the secretary of state’s office. Buescher’s spokesman, Rich Coolidge, said the complaint was forwarded to the Attorney General John Suthers, who will investigate and determine whether he will represent Buescher or advise him to get another lawyer. An administrative law judge must hold a hearing in 15 days unless Buescher requests an extension.

OH: Secretary of State Candidates Exchange Accusations

From Vindy.com:

State Sen. Jon Husted, the Republican nominee for secretary of state, said he is much more qualified for the job than Maryellen O’Shaughnessy, his Democratic opponent.

O’Shaughnessy, the Franklin County clerk of courts, questions Husted’s “trustworthiness” and said, “He clearly doesn’t understand what it is to be an administrator.”

The two secretary of state candidates met separately Monday with The Vindicator editorial board.

Monday also was the first day that Husted began airing television commercials statewide calling O’Shaughnessy a “professional politician,” who is “padding her pockets” at the expense of taxpayers.

Arizona Secretary of State Candidate Touts Experience

From The Arizona Republic:

Secretary of State Ken Bennett on Wednesday promoted his decades of experience in government as evidence that he is qualified to serve as governor if the need comes for him to replace Arizona’s top official.

He said challenger Chris Deschene’s political experience, which includes one term as a state House representative, pales in comparison. Bennett has served as a Prescott councilman and president of the state Senate and was appointed last year to the Secretary of State’s Office by Jan Brewer when she stepped in as governor to replace Janet Napolitano, who took a Cabinet post in Washington, D.C.

In Arizona, the secretary of state steps in if the governor resigns, dies or is removed from office.

Ohio Chamber of Commerce endorses Republicans for Statewide Races

From the OhioGOP:

Today, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee (OCCPaC) announced its endorsements in races for three statewide offices. OCCPaC endorsed John Kasich for Governor, Jon Husted for Secretary of State, and Mike DeWine for Attorney General.

“These endorsements represent the leadership we need to retain and attract businesses to Ohio,” said Jeffrey S. Gorman, Chairman of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. “They are not about where we have been; but rather where we must go if we are to, once again, be a state where businesses grow, families prosper, and a stronger economic environment exists for all.”

“OCCPaC took the unusual step of endorsing in selected statewide races this year because our state faces tremendous challenges that are demanding more from each of us, including the Ohio Chamber, “ said Andrew E. Doehrel, President and CEO of the Ohio Chamber. “Clearly, this action is not without risk, but we felt it was critically important for Ohio’s largest, oldest and most diverse business organization to boldly step forward when our leadership matters most.”
