CT: Final Arguments Heard in Dem’s Credentials Trial

Here’s an excerpt from Susan Bysiewicz ‘Rock band’ testimony last week.

From the Courant.com:

The judge in Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz’s Superior Court trial narrowed the legal issues Tuesday during four hours of lawyers’ final arguments about her legal credentials to run for attorney general.

Judge Michael Sheldon signaled that his eventual decision — on whether Bysiewicz has the requisite experience in the “active practice” of law — might be based on whether she has actively participated as a lawyer with her staff attorneys to issue opinions and rulings on elections.

That view could be bad or good for Bysiewicz, who has been registered as a lawyer for 24 years but is fighting to prove that she has sufficient legal experience to become attorney general.

WA: Dems trying to intimidate AG out of Health Care lawsuit

From The Seattle Times:

Democrats ratcheted up attacks on Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna on Tuesday after he made Washington a party to the 13-state lawsuit challenging the health-care bill signed by President Obama.

Democrats in the Legislature are considering a budget proviso to block McKenna from spending state money on the lawsuit.

“We are looking at that,” said Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane. “We’re researching it right now, but there is no decision yet.” In a letter to McKenna, Brown called his lawsuit “far outside the mainstream interests” of the state and asked him to reconsider.

CT: Democrat Secretary of State Kept 36k Person Political Database at Taxpayers Expense

From Courant.com:

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz’s politically oriented entries in her office’s 36,000-name constituent database drew criticism Wednesday from Democratic rivals, one of whom said she should make a public apology, and from Republican State Chairman Chris Healy, who called the entries “a political intelligence file for her own use … paid for by the taxpayers.”

The criticism came after The Courant’s disclosure Wednesday that the taxpayer-funded database contains thousands of what are labeled “special notes” on people’s political connections and personal characteristics, including some medical conditions. It also has a category headed “Ethnicity,” which identifies 2,431 people as either Jewish, Greek, Polish, African American, Hispanic or Native American.

NH: Dem House Speaker Won’t Ask Democrat to Step Down

From Concord Monitor:

House Speaker Terie Norelli will not ask state Rep. Dan Eaton to step down from his leadership position because of a continuing investigation by the attorney general’s office.

“Neither you nor I have any evidence that Representative Eaton has in fact engaged in any wrongdoing,” Norelli, a Portsmouth Democrat, wrote in a letter to House Republican Leader Sherman Packard of Londonderry. “Until such time as the Attorney General’s investigation is concluded and its report issued, it would be premature to take any action.”

The Telegraph reported last week on an investigation by the attorney general’s office into a liquor commission enforcement action at the Railroad Tavern in Keene. Liquor commission enforcement chief Eddie Edwards told the Union Leader that Eaton, a Stoddard Democrat and the majority floor leader, may have tried to influence the investigation.

Sheldon tended to scheduling matters at a hearing in Superior Court in Hartford as he conferred with lawyers for Bysiewicz, the state attorney general’s office, and the state Republican and Democratic parties.

OH: Former Democrat AG and Wife may be Next Charged

From the Columbus Dispatch:

Shortly after pleading guilty to two ethics violations arising from his work for former Attorney General Marc Dann, Leo Jennings III sat down with investigators for about two hours today to discuss information that could help build a criminal case against Dann.

Jennings, formerly Dann’s close friend, political adviser and chief spokesman, now might play a key role in helping lead prosecutors to the Democrat, who has not faced criminal charges in the nearly two years since a scandal forced him from office.

Jennings’ plea agreement produced a $2,000 fine and a sentence of 250 hours of community service. It also requires him to testify “truthfully, completely and accurately” in the investigation of Dann – with the prospect of 360 days in jail if he refuses.
