NM: Resignation Letter Rips Democrat Secretary of State

From SantaFeNewMexican.com:

The state Attorney General’s Office is reviewing a scathing letter of resignation from the recently resigned state Bureau of Elections director that accuses the Secretary of State’s Office of violating New Mexico’s Governmental Conduct Act and election laws.

The letter in question is from A.J. Salazar, who resigned Friday. It reportedly accuses Secretary of State Mary Herrera of soliciting donations from companies that contract with her office and ordering some of her employees to gather signatures on petitions for her re-election campaign.

Phil Sisneros, a spokesman for Attorney General Gary King, said in an e-mail to The New Mexican that “we never discuss ongoing investigations, including whether or not there is one.” But, he added, “I can tell you that the letter is being reviewed by our folks.”

NY: Democrat Governor’s Campaign Lasts a Week

From AuburnPub.com:

Last weekend, Gov. David Paterson traveled to upstate to announce he would seek a full term as governor.
The campaign lasted one week.

On Friday, Paterson announced he would end his campaign after a New York Times article claimed he contacted a woman who was allegedly beaten by one of the governor’s most trusted aides, David Johnson.

The Times article was the “bombshell” everyone was waiting for. The newspaper published two articles before Paterson’s announcement, one of which discussed Johnson’s role in Paterson’s administration and his questionable background. In Johnson’s background were allegations he hit multiple women and drug arrests from when he was a teenager.

NC: Democrat Pleads Guilty in Shooting Case, Gets No Jail Time

From TheTimesNews.com:

North Carolina’s longest-serving lawmaker won’t serve jail time after pleading guilty Thursday to misdemeanor assault for shooting a former client in a case that earlier had been deemed a felony.

Columbus County Superior Court Judge D. Jack Hooks accepted the guilty plea from Sen. R.C. Soles, D-Columbus, and fined Soles $1,000. Soles had been indicted last month on a felony assault charge. The state constitution would have disqualified Soles from public office had he been convicted of a felony.

First elected to the General Assembly in 1968, Soles is the state’s longest continuously serving lawmaker.

“I’ve now turned this over to the attorney general,” Paterson told WOR-AM’s John Gambling, as he declined to talk specifics.

“This is now an investigation.”

Paterson suspended assistant David Johnson Wednesday night and asked Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to investigate whether state police had improper contact with a woman the aide is accused of attacking.

NY: Judge Upholds Democrats Expulsion

From The Record:

A federal judge on Friday rejected a New York state lawmaker’s attempt to block his expulsion, saying the issue will be properly resolved by voters in a special election next month.

U.S. District Judge William H. Pauley III said Hiram Monserrate’s Queens district senate seat will only be vacant for a few weeks because Gov. David A. Paterson immediately set a March 16 special election to replace the Democrat.

The judge rejected arguments advanced by lawyers for Monserrate and several voters who sued the state after senators voted 53-8 last week to remove him because of a misdemeanor assault conviction. The lawyers argued that the voters were disenfranchised by his removal.

Dem’s Outburst Disrupts Panel

From the Sacramento Bee:

Sen. Pat Wiggins, D-Santa Rosa, interrupted a committee hearing Wednesday afternoon, screaming and racing toward committee staffers who apparently had failed to refill a water canister that she found empty after the hearing’s lunch break.

Another committee member had to intervene – blocking the 69-year-old lawmaker from the young staff members – before an aide to Wiggins led the senator back to her seat.

NY: What’s the Aftermath of Democrat’s Expulsion?

From LoHud.com:

New York lawmakers say last week’s loss of a Democratic vote could prompt more cooperation in the New York Senate, which devolved into squabbling and gridlock last summer. Or it could mean more of that partisan divisiveness.

“Without a clear majority in the Senate, Democrats need to work with Republicans in a bipartisan way,” said Sen. Dean Skelos, leader of the Republican minority. He said Senate Democratic Conference leader John Sampson has indicated he’s willing.

“The true test will be in this year’s budget, which must not increase taxes or spending, and must include initiatives to create jobs, as Senate Republicans have proposed,” Skelos said.

CT: Two Dem Rivals Criticize Secretary of States Use of Database

From Courant.com:

Two rivals of Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz in the campaign for the Democratic nomination for attorney general raised questions Thursday about her use of an internal database from her office to send thousands of e-mails soliciting political support and campaign contributions.

Bysiewicz’s two Democratic opponents — former state Senate Majority Leader George Jepsen and state Rep. Cameron Staples — both commented on a Sunday Courant story about Bysiewicz’s use of a database, assembled by her office, of 36,000 constituents’ names, including about 9,900 e-mail addresses. In the past year her campaign committee sent thousands of e-mails to people in the database soliciting political support and campaign contributions.
