Incoming Florida Republican House Speaker Marco Rubio is making good on his promise to bring new and fresh ideas to further brighten the sunshine state. You recall we’ve written a couple of times (here and also here)about Rubio’s “100 Ideas for Florida’s Future” – well now the elections are over and it’s time to get back to business.
The Miami Republican on Wednesday gave a teaser of his “100 Ideas for Florida’s Future,” the playbook he hopes Florida lawmakers will use for years to shape policy.
The full booklet will be released next week.
But Rubio revealed Wednesday that the highlights include replacing the current Sunshine State curriculum standards in Florida’s classrooms with a more “world class” alternative, cracking down on the sex trade, and stepping up government incentives for energy conservation.
Specifically, Rubio said the goal he hoped future legislative leaders would strive for is to have one of the top five K-12 education systems in the world for reading, math and science by 2020.
To get there, the state needs to get away from broad teaching “check-lists” and specialize more, he said.
Why is the vision thing such a big deal? Because “Good public policy never costs you seats. It shouldn’t.”
