NY: Poll Shows Governor’s Lead over AG Cuomo has Evaporated
Last Updated on Monday, 26 January 2009 12:49 Written by rslcpol Monday, 26 January 2009 12:19
Wow, former Lt. Governor Paterson’s ballot numbers are in a free fall. From PressConnects.com:
Gov. David Paterson’s lead over Attorney General Andrew Cuomo in a potential Democratic gubernatorial primary next year dropped from 23 points last month to just two points now, according to a poll released today.
The poll, by the Siena Research Institute, found Paterson leading Cuomo among Democrats only 35 percent to 33 percent, compared to 49 percent to 26 percent a month ago.
“Whether because of the prolonged Senate selection situation or on-going budget issues, voters are less inclined to support Gov. Paterson for election today than they were only one month ago,” said Siena poll spokesman Steven Greenberg.
Politics on the Hudson makes some points about Democrat prospects holding the office with Paterson as the standard bearer. Dave over at the Hedgehog Report has lots of poll numbers from a couple of other recent surveys. And here’s a close up of A.G. Cuomo…really close.

NY: Untimely Cloud Hangs Over Gov’s appointment
Last Updated on Friday, 23 January 2009 01:57 Written by rslcpol Friday, 23 January 2009 12:49
This might cause a problem or two for Ms. Gillibrand. And maybe for Mr. Paterson…but probably not for Mr. Cuomo. From The Village Voice:
No one familiar with Gillibrand’s rapid political ascent would question the pivotal role that Rutnik has played in it, milking his wide-ranging political connections for his daughter.
The governor’s office has made it clear that Caroline Kennedy was submarined by questions she couldn’t answer in the vetting process, ostensibly involving taxes and a nanny. But it’s unclear if Paterson has even considered the possibility that as he and Gillibrand prepare for their 2010 campaigns, her family could be dogged by conflict of interest allegations.

Several Republicans Interested in Potentially Open Congressional Seat
Last Updated on Friday, 23 January 2009 12:28 Written by rslcpol Friday, 23 January 2009 12:28
From PostStar.com:
Other Republicans who have expressed interest in running include state Assembly Minority James Tedisco; Alexander “Sandy” Treadwell, a former state secretary of state who lost to Gillibrand in November; and Richard Wager, who dropped out of the 2008 race early last year, according to candidates and county Republican chairmen.
Gillibrand, D-Greenport, is widely reported to be among the top possibilities for an appointment to the U.S. Senate seat just vacated by Hillary Clinton, who was appointed U.S. secretary of state.
If Gillibrand is appointed to the Senate by Gov. David Paterson, a special election would be held to fill the 20th Congressional District seat. Paterson, in press releases issued Thursday, said he “is now entering the final phase of his selection process” and will announce his selection at noon on Friday.

Last Updated on Wednesday, 21 January 2009 10:32 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 21 January 2009 10:32
From PolitickerNY.com:
David Paterson said he is considering Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for an appointment to the U.S. Senate.
“He’s a person that is the only current elected statewide official in New York, the rest of us came to our positions one way or the other. We won’t rehash that,” Paterson told Katie Couric and Bob Schieffer on CBS. “But he has outstanding qualities and is someone I’m considering.”

NY: AG Talks to Governor about Clinton Senate Seat
Last Updated on Wednesday, 14 January 2009 04:27 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 14 January 2009 11:34
Cuomo was hiding his desire? We never would’ve guessed in a million jillion years that Andrew Cuomo wanted to be a U.S. Senator. Never. Ever. From the Daily News:
He may not want it known publicly, but Attorney General Andrew Cuomo formally interviewed with Gov. Paterson for Hillary Clinton’s U.S. Senate seat, the Daily News has learned.
Cuomo met with Paterson at the governor’s Manhattan office last month to discuss the position, two sources said. “We will not comment on the governor’s process other than to say your information is factually inaccurate,” Cuomo spokesman John Milgrim said.
The governor’s office had no comment.

NY: Assembly GOP – Election to Replace Clinton
Last Updated on Tuesday, 13 January 2009 02:25 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 13 January 2009 02:25
From Newsday.com:
New York’s Republican Assembly minority wants a special election to fill the expected vacancy in the U.S. Senate instead of allowing Democratic Gov. David Paterson to make a unilateral appointment through a secretive process.
Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco, a Schenectady Republican, acknowledges a special election could take three months and cost as much as $20 million to seat Hillary Rodham Clinton’s successor. He argues that it’s well worth the effort to avoid diminishing democracy.

NY: Dem Governor Unveils Budget With Numerous Tax Hikes
Last Updated on Wednesday, 17 December 2008 11:58 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 17 December 2008 08:14
Sweet – they can tax things you download now. What’s next? Hefty fees on the internet? We think you can call this the Democrat nickel and dime strategy. Nobody notices a bunch of little taxes. Instead of raising taxes, how about finding a way to cut spending – you know figure out the difference between what you want versus what you need. From the NY Daily News:
Trying to close a $15.4 billion budget gap, Paterson called for 88 new fees and a host of other taxes, including an “iPod tax” that taxes the sale of downloaded music and other “digitally delivered entertainment services.”
“We’re going to have to take some extreme measures,” Paterson said Tuesday after unveiling the slash-and-burn budget.
The proposal, which needs legislative approval, did not include broad-based income tax increases, but relied on smaller ones to raise $4.1 billion from cash-strapped New Yorkers.

NY: Governor Doesn’t Like Judge List; Asks AG to find Loophole
Last Updated on Thursday, 4 December 2008 10:52 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 4 December 2008 10:26
We love it when politicians are outraged. There’s never any hyperbole involved. From Newsday.com:
Saying he’s “outraged” by the absence of women on the short list to become New York’s next chief judge, Gov. David A. Paterson has asked Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to investigate legal alternatives.
“It seems highly unusual in a class of seven individuals seen to be capable of supervising the Court of Appeals that none of them would be a woman,” Paterson said yesterday. “The process has to be called into question.”

NY: Former LG now Governor Won’t Take Senate Seat; Wants to Run for Re-election
Last Updated on Tuesday, 18 November 2008 12:42 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 18 November 2008 12:42
From Newsday.com:
Paterson moved into the executive mansion in March after the resignation of Eliot Spitzer amid a prostitution scandal. Paterson on Monday recalled the turmoil surrounding Spitzer’s departure, saying, “I wouldn’t want to put the state through that again.”
If Paterson were to move to Washington, he would be succeeded by the State Senate majority leader — Sen. Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) currently holds the post — because there is no lieutenant governor. Paterson has the sole authority to appoint Clinton’s replacement if she were to decide to leave Congress.

NY: Who Replaces Hillary If She Leaves the Senate?
Last Updated on Friday, 14 November 2008 12:09 Written by rslcpol Friday, 14 November 2008 12:09
From CBS News:
Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-Manhattan, Brooklyn): Has the gravitas. Lacks the patron he had in ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer.
Rep. Nita Lowey (D- Westchester): Stepped aside for HRC in 2000 and keeps seat in the hands of a woman. A decade older than Clinton.
Rep. Greg Meeks (D-Queens): Up-and-comer. But doesn’t seem senatorial yet.
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo: Former HUD secretary has chilled out and moderated his nasty-man image — and moving him out of the way would eliminate a potential challenger for Paterson. His old rep haunts him and nobody, except us, has really floated his name.
