NY: EX Gov. Was Up To His Neck In Dirty Tricks Against Senate Leader Bruno

You so reap what you so in this life. Biblical aint it?

Disgraced ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer was up to his neck in his administration’s dirty tricks aimed at discrediting State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, it was reported last night. Albany District Attorney David Soares, who investigated the scandal, has found that Spitzer ordered senior aides to release potentially damning information, The New York Times reported.Spitzer has adamantly denied involvement in any effort to damage his chief GOP opponent. But, according to the report, he even called former aide Darren Dopp at home to check on his progress in carrying out the orders.

NY: How Long Will Paterson Last?

Uh – we’re not sure what to make of Albany politics. One thing’s for sure, we’re not sure if former Governor Spitzer and current Governor Paterson are huge Toby Keith fans or not (can you see Eliot Spitzer at a Toby Keith show?), and we’re not sure if they’re “talking bout hooking up or hanging out”, but we’re pretty sure they were “just talking about tonight.”

By now, four days into Governor David Paterson’s reign, one thing is clear: He never thought he was actually going to be governor. The loosey-goosey (and juicy!) way he’s blended his personal and professional affairs don’t reflect the kind of care and caution that most people who expect close scrutiny would have used. But Paterson is fully aware of that and is doing the best he can with the situation as it is. Democrats can only hope that he doesn’t have any more big revelations, because if this goes on, Albany Republicans are going to start actively questioning his ethical authority.

Finally – does anybody want to place any bets on who the next New York Governor is going to be?

NY: Looks Like the end for ‘Troopergate’

Members of Troop F, which has headquarters in the Town of Wallkill, said they had known of his retirement since Wednesday.

The New York Post reported today that Felton was forced out by new Gov. David Paterson because Paterson perceived that Felton helped former Gov. Eliot Spitzer smear Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno.

Paterson asked for the resignation of former Gov. Spitzer’s executive staff and every agency commissioner yesterday, the Post reported.

NY: Lawmakers React To New Gov’s Speech

Who remembers the team building spirit of Eliot Spitzer’s inaugural address in January of 2007 when he said:”Like Rip Van Winkle, the legendary character created by New York author Washington Irving, New York has slept through much of the past decade while the rest of the world has passed us by,” while outgoing Governor George Pataki sat nearby. Nice touch of class by Mr. Spitzer. Thankfully, it appears Mr. Paterson has shown some restraint in his inaugural remarks.

– Former Gov. George Pataki: “Whenever New York has faced a challenge or a difficult time we come together. And David Paterson is the type of person who will work well to bring people together. We have to put aside politics and partisanship and work in the public’s interest.”

– Attorney General Andrew Cuomo: “Gov. David Paterson … has the experience, skills and personality needed to lead this state. The recent negative developments on Wall Street serve to illustrate that significant challenges lie ahead. The governor is exactly right: We must all work together to move this state forward.”

– Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco, R-Schenectady: “His leadership skills are needed – and will be tested – more than ever, as New York struggles with a nearly $5 billion budget deficit, some of the nation’s highest property taxes, an economy – especially upstate – that is hurting and a state fiscal deadline of April 1 that is upon us.”

NY: LG Paterson Drops the ‘L’ and becomes Governor (and what that means for Albany)

And how could this affect that other statewide elected democrat? Well if you ask the Wall Street Journal, it could open the door for Attorney General Cuomo.

And who are the other “winners and losers” of this whole mess? At least one paper takes a look

Oh, and apparently the soon-to-be former Governor will skip the inauguration

ALBANY — Incoming Gov. David A. Paterson is at the Capitol this morning preparing to take the oath of office this afternoon as Albany gets back to the business of governing following last week’s sex scandal revelations involving Gov. Eliot L. Spitzer.

Paterson, who is legally blind, is expected to give a relatively brief address that he has committed to memory at 1 p.m. to a joint session of the State Legislature and to a who’s who of the state’s political elite, including the state’s congressional delegation and local government leaders.

NY: New Governor Talks Tax Hike

Maybe the new Democrat Governor will also increase taxes on high dollar escort services…call it the 871 Bill.

Although Paterson vowed to continue with Spitzer’s policy not to raise taxes further, Paterson said the tax hike intends to target only those earning more than $1 million a year. The tax increase for big earners was an idea from the Democrat-led New York state assembly. It is expected, though, to be resisted by Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno. “Senate Republicans will not be a party to such a massive new tax increase in this, or any other state budget,” Bruno said. He warned that more taxes may drive New Yorkers out of their houses and the state.

Lt. Gov. Paterson Would Be New York’s First Black Governor

If Spitzer goes, would Governor Paterson be the first blind governor in the United States? He would certainly be the first governor who ever filed a bill, repeatedly, that would’ve made it legal for suspects to resist arrest by police officers – sound crazy? Check it out.

Eliot Spitzer’s would-be successor is a street-smart New York City politician who ascended by serving the Democratic Party and the voters in his Harlem-area State Senate district.Lt. Gov. David A. Paterson, who once called himself a “bomb thrower,” would become New York’s first African-American governor and only the eighth in American history if Spitzer resigns. He’s 53, plays pickup basketball and in 1999 completed the New York City Marathon.

“David Paterson is no stranger to Buffalo,” said Mayor Byron W. Brown, who served with Paterson in the State Senate earlier this decade and cast one of the deciding votes that elevated Paterson to Senate minority leader in 2002.

NY: Dem Governor Linked To Prostitution Ring

Another dem sex scandal for 08… Press conference upcoming….

From the New York Times:

ALBANY – Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning.

Mr. Spitzer, who was huddled with his top aides inside his Fifth Avenue apartment early this afternoon, had hours earlier abruptly canceled his scheduled public events for the day. He scheduled an announcement for 2:15 after inquiries from the Times.

Mr. Spitzer, a first term Democrat who pledged to bring ethics reform an end the often seamy ways of Albany, is married with three children.

Just last week, federal prosecutors arrested four people in connection with an expensive prostitution operation. Administration officials would not say that this was the ring with which the governor had become involved.

NY: AG Cuomo Wrapping Up ‘Troopergate’ Probe

ALBANY – Albany DA David Soares’ Troopergate probe will wind up amid March Madness budget season at the Capitol, the prosecutor said Thursday.

But Soares was mum on whether his second look at the political dirty tricks scandal involving aides to Gov. Spitzer will produce any criminal charges.

Sources familiar with the probe said this time Soares is putting witnesses under oath, though Spitzer has not been asked to give sworn testimony.

OR: Recently Endorsed AG Candidate Wants Bigger Profile

State Rep. Greg Macpherson said Wednesday he would be a doer if elected attorney general, but would have a higher profile than the incumbent who has endorsed him.

In a Salem appearance, Macpherson drew a contrast between his record in three terms in the Oregon House and the stances of his Democratic primary opponent, John Kroger, who has called for a more aggressive approach in the mold of New York’s Eliot Spitzer, now that state’s governor.

“Some people like to draw attention to themselves and some people like to get things done,” Macpherson said at a Marion County DemoForum luncheon.
