NY: Crowded Field for AG Waits on Cuomo

From The Press Republican:

The most active campaign for statewide office this year doesn’t have any candidates yet and may not even have an incumbent.

This is the odd world of the race for New York attorney general, in which at least a half-dozen lawyers and prosecutors are considering a run — but only if popular Attorney General Andrew Cuomo runs for governor. The once almost-anonymous job has transformed over the past 15 years into a high-profile role as the chief enforcer on Wall Street and in corporate America’s boardrooms.

The headline-grabbing post has become known by its initials, AG, sometimes derisively said to stand for “Aspiring Governor.” It may also soon produce New York’s second consecutive elected governor.

NY: Republican Leaders Building Slate of Candidates

From poughkeepsiejournal.com:

State Republican leaders are touring the state this week as they try to build a statewide slate of candidates for the November elections, boosted by recent election victories nationwide.

The tour by state GOP chairman Ed Cox and Republican legislative leaders comes as the party appears to be coalescing around Rick Lazio as its gubernatorial candidate.

On Tuesday night, Erie County Executive Chris Collins bowed out of a potential run, leaving Lazio as the only announced candidate.

Lazio, a former Long Island congressman and U.S. Senate candidate in 2000, has secured more than 40 percent of the weighted vote needed to win the GOP nomination at its convention this spring.

NY: GOP Leaders hit the Road

From the NYDaily News:

By tomorrow, Senate Minority Leader Dean Skelos and Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb and Cox will have hit four cities, including Watertown, Syracuse and Rochester, with each meeting involving Republicans from seven different counties.

The topics of discussion include the “important 2010 cycle, legislative agenda and future of the party in New York State,” according to an e-mail invitation from state GOP Executive Director Tom Basile that was forwarded to me by a reader.

Basile called the meetings “unprecedented” and “a rare opportunity to have direct access to our legislative leadership and state party officials.” (According to CapConf, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy is going to make it to the Watertown meeting, too).

NY: Will Attorney General Cuomo Become Candidate for Governor?

From The New York Times:

Andrew M. Cuomo’s father, Mario, once left a plane waiting on a runway here that would have carried him to New Hampshire and a presidential candidacy, ending years of speculation about his interest in higher office.

From the outside, it looks as if Cuomo the son is reprising his father’s role as a reluctant Democratic star.

With the primary election for governor eight months away, Mr. Cuomo, the attorney general, continues to delay pulling the trigger on a candidacy amid growing calls for him to do so. Impatience among Democrats has increased in the past few days, as Mr. Cuomo reported a huge fund-raising lead over Gov. David A. Paterson — $16 million on hand to the governor’s $3 million — and a Republican upset in a Senate race in Massachusetts renewed fears in New York about Mr. Paterson’s vulnerability.

NY: AG Cuomo’s War Chest Has 5 Times more money than Governor Paterson

From The New York Times:

Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo has not formally announced his candidacy for governor, but he is already running ahead in the fund-raising race.

Mr. Cuomo is to report on Friday that he has more than $16 million in his campaign account, dwarfing Gov. David A. Paterson’s war chest of more than $3 million.

The $13 million gap underscores a growing sense of inevitability surrounding Mr. Cuomo, with donors and other prominent Democrats increasingly viewing him as the party’s nominee for governor. The lopsided results also raise questions about the governor’s ability to wage a robust and competitive campaign for governor.

NY AG Finds Evidence of Wrongdoing by Democrat Senate Majority Leader

From the New York Post:

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said yesterday he has found “extensive evidence” of wrongdoing by state Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada, including bilking his Bronx not-for-profit health-care clinic of $130,000 a year by switching a janitorial contract to an Espada-owned firm.

The explosive allegations were outlined in a 17-page motion filed in Manhattan state Supreme Court that seeks to enforce a subpoena for a wide range of records issued to the for-profit Espada Management Co. in August.

The motion says that Espada and his allies at nonprofit Soundview HealthCare Network arranged in 2007 to switch a $270,000-a-year janitorial contract to Espada Management, which was then paid $396,000 a year for providing the same services.
