OH: Marc Dann – The Misstep Magnet

Hey, we here at the SNS love us a good Marc Dann story. Check the links below for some great snap shots of the first year of the Marc Dann administration:
Reliving the 2004 Election
A slight hint of hypocrisy in office
Religious Intolerance
Promises not kept on promises not kept
Wanting to be Eliot Spitzer

He got caught in a traffic jam and arrived late to his first big news conference. He used state money to purchase an expensive Chevy Suburban SUV for traversing the state from a campaign donor. A TV camera caught him cursing a reporter over a negative story outside a fundraiser for presidential hopeful Barack Obama.”Marc Dann is a mistake factory,” said political scientist and consultant Mark Weaver, a longtime ally of Dann’s 2006 opponent, Betty Montgomery. Weaver said several Republicans are mulling taking Dann on in 2010.

A Look At Activist State Attorneys General – ‘Regulation Through Litigation’

They say Bill Clinton was one of the first:

In his high-profile pursuit of questionable business practices in the student loan industry, New York’s Andrew Cuomo is following the model of the activist, consumer-oriented state attorney general. Contrary to popular belief, this role was not invented by his predecessor Eliot Spitzer, now New York governor.

Others view it as the liberal reaction to the conservatism of Ronald Reagan. State AGs reconfigured their historic caretaker role into using litigation to change the status quo — an approach called “regulation through litigation.”

NY: ‘Troopergate’ Back In The News

Oh, it seemed like such a good idea at the time – what better way to get the dirt on your opponents than to have state troopers do the snooping. Nobody would ever complain about that type of thing…if they never found out.

ALBANY — Albany County District Attorney David Soares faced a new round of criticism Wednesday after his apparent decision to hold off on empanelling a grand jury to probe whether a former top aide to Gov. Eliot Spitzer committed perjury in the “Troopergate” scandal.

OH: Statehouse Is Slow and Here’s Why

“The Reverend” Ted Strickland (he’s a Governor to you know) doesn’t want to make the same mistakes New York’s Democrat Governor Eliot Spitzer made by doing something to potentially foul up the Presidential campaign of one of his allies (and maybe his chances of being the Dem Veep nominee).

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Things are numbingly slow at the Ohio Statehouse these days and politics can help explain why.Speaker Jon Husted (HYOO’-stehd) blames a lull in the Ohio House on Governor Strickland. Husted says the Democratic governor aspires to be the next vice president and accuses him of spending too much time on national politics and too little time bettering Ohio.

VA: Panel Wants Troopers For Immigration Enforcement

This is a perfect example of why state and local Democrats CONTINUE to come up short on illegal immigration. Their first reaction is to make a cheap political point here and there – blame the current Presidential Administration, and hope for the best.  Democrat’s like Virginia’s Governor Tim Kaine, and New York’s Governor Eliot Spitzer (he finally got the message, only after negatively impacting Hillary Clinton’s Presidential campaign), have completely and thoroughly abdicated their responsibility to lead on this issue. Thank goodness the nation has leaders at the state and local level, leaders like Virginia GOP Delegate Dave Albo, Tennessee’s House Republican Glen Casada, and Colorado’s Republican House Leader Mike May who understand that illegal immigration is an issue that must be dealt with – regardless of what your political leaders tell you.

“I expect the governor will reject it,” said Albo, who helped the GOP make illegal immigration a campaign issue this fall. “He has consistently said he does not want to give [that] authority to state police.”Kaine’s position has not changed, said Gordon Hickey, the governor’s press secretary. “His position has been clear: The commonwealth is doing all it can,” Hickey said Tuesday. “It is not the commonwealth’s job to pick up the slack for the federal government.”

It used to be the legal stylings of New York Democrat Eliot Spitzer were all the rage, now everyone wants to be like California Democrat Jerry Brown. Why doesn’t anybody want to be like South Dakota Republican Larry Long?

NY: GOP Shuts Down Dem Gov. Illegal Immigrant License Plan

On just what planet is the Democrat Governor residing on this issue? Talk about stubborn.  You know who’s been remarkably silent on this issue?  Democrat A.G. Andrew Cuomo.  You’d think he’d want to get in front of this issue in his run up to the primary campaign against Spitzer in 2010.

ALBANY – Senate Republicans yesterday returned to the state Capitol and sought to stop a new state Department of Motor Vehicles policy that would allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses. In a direct rebuke of Democratic Gov. Eliot Spitzer, the Senate passed legislation that would require a Social Security number or other proof of legal status to obtain a driver’s license.
