Democrat Attorney General candidate Felecia Rotellini has said she was unaware that one of her major campaign contributors is actively working to harm Arizona’s economy by calling for a boycott of the state.

Rotellini has accepted $4,176 from the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), which supports a boycott due to their opposition of SB 1070 Arizona’s anti-illegal immigration law.

With the parties’ nominees for attorney general decided, both candidates moved quickly Tuesday to criticize their opponent and define the issues in the Nov. 2 general election.

Tom Horne, state superintendent of public instruction, became the Republican nominee Tuesday morning after his opponent, former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, conceded the race.

Early voting begins Oct. 7, giving the candidates only a few weeks to make their cases to the electorate – and to raise money from it. Both candidates are running without public financing.

Horne said Democratic opponent Felecia Rotellini would be a stand-in for President Barack Obama who would not adequately defend Arizona against encroachments on states’ rights.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne kept his narrow lead Monday over former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas in the race to become the Republican nominee for Arizona attorney general.

Horne had a 892-vote advantage over Thomas at the end of business Monday.

His lead grew by 38 votes since the weekend.

The race to become the Republican nominee for Arizona attorney general has apparently come to an end.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne declared a victory over Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas via Twitter Sunday afternoon. Horne confirmed to ABC15 he posted the celebratory message on the social media site.

A statement from Horne’s campaign says he is now looking forward to the general election in November, where he will face off against Democratic nominee Felecia Rotellini.

But as election officials continued to tally thousands of ballots from Tuesday’s primaries, the Republican nominee for attorney general remained uncertain.

It may not be the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox pennant chase, but the Republican attorney general’s race between Tom Horne and Andrew Thomas remains tight as election officials continue to count votes.

As of this morning, Horne had a 456-vote lead on Thomas — up slightly from yesterday. The vote count could take a few more days as Maricopa County elections officials count early ballots dropped off at polling places, and other late entries.

Thomas, an ally of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, did better than Horne in Maricopa County.

In a surprising reversal, Tom Horne came from behind late Tuesday to take the lead against Andrew Thomas in the race to become Republican nominee for attorney general.

Horne, the superintendent of public instruction, came from behind after being down some 9,000 votes earlier on Tuesday evening. But as votes were counted in Maricopa and Pima counties, he slowly erased Thomas’ lead.

Thomas, the former Maricopa County attorney, had spent the primary season painting Horne as an untrustworthy liberal. Horne, the superintendent of public instruction, said Thomas was an out-of-control prosecutor and a threat to citizens’ constitutional rights.

In the end, a slight majority of voters appeared to have chosen Horne as their standard-bearer.

In the Democratic race, Felecia Rotellini was holding on to a narrow lead over David Lujan.

Thomas, 43, ran as a proven crime fighter, saying crime had dropped by 19 percent during his time as county attorney. He said that he best represented Republican values in the race, taking strong positions against illegal immigration and abortion.

“It’s a barn-burner in the attorney-general races in both parties, but I’m very confident we’ll ultimately win,” he said on Tuesday evening at Republican headquarters in Phoenix, while he was still in the lead.

The race for the Republican nomination for Attorney General is turning into one of the more vicious battles of this primary season.

State Superintendent Tom Horne and former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, both seasoned politicians, may be in for the toughest campaign of their careers.

Andrew Thomas resigned as Maricopa County Attorney to run for AG.

“I think we need new energy and vision in this office for these tough challenges we have ahead of us,” he says, hoping to take some of his illegal immigration programs statewide — particularly his war against human smugglers.

“I think that that can be done very successfully on a statewide basis. We have a model in Maricopa County that I have done with the sheriff and it worked,” says Thomas.

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli has joined with attorneys general from eight other states in a legal brief supporting Arizona’s hotly disputed new immigration law.

The statute, signed into law in April, is considered the toughest in the nation. It directs police enforcing other laws to ask about a suspect’s immigration status if there is reason to believe the person is in this country illegally. Other provisions of the law make failure to carry immigration documents a crime and empower individuals to sue government agencies over questions of immigration law enforcement.
