SC: Candidates for Attorney General Battle it Out
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 12:39 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 15 June 2010 12:13
From wolo.com:
The race to be the state’s top prosecutor is heating up. The primary for attorney general was one of the closest in the state, forcing a Republican runoff next Tuesday. ABC Columbia News has more on the two men battling it out to be the GOP nominee.
Alan Wilson has worked as an assistant solicitor and an assistant attorney general. Now he wants to lead the A.G.’s office, saying he has courtroom experience that his opponent lacks. Wilson says, “We need a prosecutor to be the state’s chief prosecutor. My opponent has no prosecutorial experience. He has no law enforcement experience.”
Leighton Lord, a 21 year private practice veteran, says executive experience is more important. He says running the second largest law firm in the state gives him an edge over Wilson. Lord says, “The private sector is the meritocracy. The private sector is where you learn to run things. I don’t see on his resume where he’s ever run anything.” Wilson, a combat veteran, says he has led soldiers and he can lead lawyers.

Two Midlands attorneys are headed toward a runoff in two weeks in the Republican nomination for state attorney general, while another pair of Republicans face a runoff for their party’s nomination for lieutenant governor.

Primary day in South Carolina
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 12:49 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 8 June 2010 01:16
From Christian Science Monitor:
The primary also will be pivotal for three congressional elections. Four other statewide offices — state schools chief, state attorney general, treasurer and comptroller general — are also on ballots.
But the race that has grabbed the spotlight is the Republican gubernatorial primary. State Rep. Nikki Haley, who was dogged the last two weeks by claims that she had trysts with two separate men, vies to become the first woman GOP nominee for governor and the first Indian-American with a serious shot at the state’s top elected office.
Haley, with strong backing from tea party activists saw her popularity soar last month with an endorsement from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. And she’s denied and weathered unsubstantiated allegations from the two men claiming physical relationships with the married mother of two.

I have a vision for the office that will allow it to be a much more powerful tool for change in South Carolina. Specifically, I have the experience working with law enforcement that is necessary. I have proven my ability to lead and manage lawyers, so I will run an effective office. Finally, I have proven my ability to get things done, such as being the lead lawyer for Boeing & Company in their recent move to South Carolina.

SC: 3 Republicans in Tight Money Race for Governor
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 01:48 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:44
From GreenvilleOnline:
Attorney General Henry McMaster appears to have won the dollar race in the second quarter in his bid to win the GOP nomination for governor.
The two-term Republican attorney general reported raising $430,078 in cash for his primary bid. But he was trailed closely by Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer’s $397,978 and U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett $393,161.
“It feels good to be gaining both financial and political momentum at precisely the right time in this race,” said McMaster spokesman Rob Godfrey.
The GOP’s fourth candidate, state Rep. Nikki Haley, reported with $192,394 for the quarter. The figures reflect cash raised during the quarter, not non-cash aid for the candidates.
However, Barrett leads the cash-on-hand race with $1.6 million to $1.4 million each for Bauer and McMaster. Haley had $530,023 on hand on March 31.

SC AG: “Why I’m Suing over ObamaCare”
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 01:59 Written by rslcpol Thursday, 1 April 2010 12:59
From WashingtonExaminer.com:
When the people of South Carolina are subjected to actions that violate their constitutional rights and our state’s sovereignty, it is my sworn duty as attorney general to protect them. For that reason, South Carolina has joined with 16 other states in a legal challenge to President Obama’s new health care law, with additional states expected to join in the coming days.
President Obama’s national health care law represents an unprecedented encroachment on the liberty of individuals by mandating that all citizens purchase health care insurance, whether they want to or not. And if they do not comply, they will be forced to pay a tax penalty to the IRS. This forced tax penalty constitutes an unlawful direct tax.
Some mistakenly compare mandating federal health insurance to automobile insurance. Driving is a choice and a privilege. If you choose to drive, a state is within its constitutional authority to require insurance to do so on its roads. A more accurate comparison would be requiring all citizens to have auto insurance, even if they don’t drive, and then penalizing them if they do not purchase it.

SC: Democrat Won’t Jump into Attorney General Race; Dems Concede Race to Republicans?
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 02:42 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 9 March 2010 02:29
From The Palmetto Scoop:
With less than two weeks until filing begins for all state and local offices, it appears South Carolina Democrats are going to concede the state attorney general’s office to Republicans.
After running a not-so-successful campaign to become the state’s top prosecutor, 1st Circuit Solicitor David Pascoe said on Friday that he would not file for the office.
“It’s a very simple reason,” Pascoe told the Orangeburg Times and Democrat. “I just want to stay as solicitor.”
There might be another “simple” reason, though: Money. Pascoe’s fledgling campaign raised a meager $500 during the fourth quarter of 2009 and had only $2,600 on hand.
