SC: Lt. Governor and Attorney General Winning the Name Race

South Carolinians are far more familiar with Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer and state Attorney General Henry McMaster than the other Republicans running for governor.

But nearly as many Republicans dislike Bauer as like him, a factor that could hinder his ability to make it to a runoff.

The two other Republicans in the governor’s race, U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett of Westminster and state Rep. Nikki Haley of Lexington County – and the entire Democratic field – are not known to South Carolinians.

South Carolina Candidates Have High-Tech Approaches

Seizing on ever-changing technology, South Carolina’s gubernatorial campaigns are unleashing a cloud of new interactive approaches to make you feel connected to their candidates and gain your vote.

Last week, state Sen. Vincent Sheheen, a Camden Democrat running for governor, unveiled the Sheheen Action Network, an interactive social component to his Web site.

Based on technology used by President Barack Obama’s campaign, the network lets Sheheen supporters join or start their own groups, like Teachers for Sheheen and University of South Carolina Students for Sheheen, organize their own campaign events, write blog posts, and upload photos and videos from campaign events.

SC: State Senator Suggests Eliminating Lt. Governor Position

State Sen. Larry Martin, R-Pickens, said legislators should consider doing away with the lieutenant governor’s position.

Martin told The Greenville News today there’s no compelling reason for the state to spend the money the job and its office require without real work for the lieutenant governor to do.

SC Attorney General McMaster Presses Health Care fight

In fact, McMaster’s initiative to prepare legal action against the provision gained more support Monday when Oklahoma’s Drew Edmondson became the 14th attorney general in the country and the first Democrat to sign on.

“Politicians in Washington are proposing to pass a law that is unfair, unjust and unconstitutional — and burdens 49 states, including South Carolina,” McMaster told The Post and Courier.

McMaster, a Republican running for governor, said his research has uncovered more potential constitutional flaws with the legislation, including another provision that gives Florida an advantage.
