WV: Paper – GOP AG Candidate Would Clean things Up

From the Charleston Daily Mail:

Darrell McGraw turned the attorney general’s office into a plaintiffs’ law firm that uses the power of the state to extract money from corporations.

It is one more reason why the business world views the state as one big judicial hellhole.

McGraw farms suits out to private law firms without a bidding process. The firms rake in millions, and they are remembering him at election time.

Republican challenger Dan Greear found that 45 donors related to the law firms that McGraw hired have kicked in more than $43,000 to his campaign.

WV: Dem AG’s Campaign Donations Questioned

From the Charleston Daily Mail:

Charleston lawyer Dan Greear, the Republican challenging state Attorney General Darrell McGraw, says at least $43,000 donated to McGraw’s campaign this election comes either directly or indirectly from lawyers who’ve benefited from state lawsuits.

Greear identified 45 donors who are either lawyers or family members of lawyers who have served as special assistant attorneys general on lawsuits brought by McGraw’s office and reaped millions of dollars in legal fees.

“The list of McGraw’s contributions compared with the list of special assistant attorneys general raises the question of whether the power of the attorney general’s office is for sale for political donations,” Greear said.

West Virginia AG Race Gets More Testy

This is fantastic article.  There are numerous anecdotes that perfectly frame and back up the narrative that Republican A.G. nominee Dan Greear is trying to paint in this race.  It’s one thing for a political opponent to illustrate the failings of a candidate – it’s altogether something else when multiple news organizations (not blogs) do it.  From Charleston Daily Mail:

Republican challenger Dan Greear blasted state Attorney General Darrell McGraw for not agreeing to debate him in public.

Greear says McGraw won’t debate because his campaign doesn’t want the attorney general’s temper to show in public.

But Deputy Attorney General Fran Hughes said McGraw won’t debate Greear because the Charleston lawyer’s campaign has been recklessly sullying McGraw’s reputation and smearing McGraw’s employees in public. She called Greear’s criticisms “ridiculous.”

WV: Criticisms of Dem AG More Than Just Politics

Baaaad story and bad news for naughty Democrat Darrell McGraw – great story for Republican A.G. challenger Dan Greear.  From The State Journal:

With an election less than a month away, critics of state Attorney General Darrell McGraw are trying to make a case that the attorney general is out of bounds. These are more than partisan charges.

On more than one occasion, members of the state Legislature have expressed their dismay with the way McGraw handles funds that his office recovers through lawsuits and settlements. Controlled by Democrats, the Legislature has passed a law that requires the Attorney General’s Office to report any funds it recovers through legal action.

The federal government contends that West Virginia owes it money from a $10 million OxyContin settlement — money that McGraw doled out to a number of parties, including lawyers who represented the state in the case. And what about McGraw’s relationship with those generously compensated law firms? It appears that a few lawyers benefit, and the rest of us pay the price.

Major West Virginia Newspaper Endorses Republican Dan Greear for Attorney General

From the Charleston Daily Mail:

WEST Virginians are still stuck at 49th in per capita income. Voters sick of that may want to address some of the factors that cause corporations to be reluctant to do business here.

One of those factors is the state’s perceived hostility to business. Part of that reputation stems from Attorney General Darrell McGraw’s use of that office.

The Daily Mail endorses Republican Dan Greear, 40, for attorney general. He could protect consumers every bit as well without any of the arrogance, cronyism and secrecy that have clouded McGraw’s tenure.

McGraw, now 71, has turned the office into a kind of tort law firm that seeks damages from corporations. McGraw allows private lawyers – often, campaign contributors – to wield the power of the state in class-action suits against businesses.

West Virginia: The Lawsuit Happy State

From 12 WBOY:

Sorry, but I would just as soon NOT have the state chasing this dragon, and I’m not even sure where this dragon is. But I suppose our state government will track it down and go to court.

If asked, McGraw would remind us that he fought the good fight when he took on the tobacco companies against the advice of a governor and others who were litigation adverse. He later won a settlement with a pharmaceutical company. He has won millions of dollars for the people, and we get to hear about it every campaign season.

In the process, McGraw, et al, have shaped West Virginia’s reputation in the minds of business leaders across this land. It isn’t a pretty picture.

WV: Dem AG Sues Florida Company for trying to Collect their Money

Wonder how long McGraw was holding on to this one.  From the Herald Dispatch:

West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw is suing a Florida collection agency, alleging it used illegal tactics to try to collect debt and wasn’t properly licensed.

McGraw filed the lawsuit Monday against Charles Howell & Associates and President Gregory Wells in Kanawha County Circuit Court.

McGraw accuses the company of threatening to have West Virginians arrested for not paying their bills and of disclosing personal information to employers, neighbors, co-workers and family members.

WV: GOP AG Candidate Launches Statewide Ad Campaign

Republican Dan Greear, taking on Democrat Darrell McGraw,  has launched a statewide ad campaign titled “Proven Leader, Positive Change”.

Positive change, something West Virginians need in the state Attorney General Office.

WV: Recent Poll Showing GOP AG Candidate Gaining Ground Broken Down

Republican A.G. candidate Dan Greear can win this contest against the embattled Democrat incumbent Darrell McGraw.  From WTRF:

While polls pop up with numbers attempting to predict a presidential winner, the West Virginia Wesleyan College poll for The State Journal tracks the profiles behind the numbers.

The poll, conducted this week by Orion Strategies, questioned 600 “likely voters,” with emphasis placed on duplicating the West Virginia electorate as closely as possible in regard to party affiliation, age, gender and district distribution.

Below are the complete results of the poll.

WV AG: Money Money Money (Video)

The first campaign commercial in the fight to bring commonsense to the West Virginia A.G.’s office has been launched by Republican A.G. nominee Dan Greear.  The spot is all about money, and like The O’Jays have told America for decades – some people got to have it, people will steal from their mother, people will rob their own brother, for the love of money people can’t even walk the streets, people lie rob and cheat, people don’t care who they hurt or beat for the almighty dollar – talkin’ about cash!

Great first effort from the Greear campaign.  The spot is really a nice compliment to some of the other spots that are on the air in West Virginia educating voters on just what exactly the incumbent Democrat A.G. Darrell McGraw has been doing all these years.  If you like this spot, and want to see commonsense returned to the West Virginia A.Gs office – check out Dan Greear’s website right now and see the commercial below.

Of course we guess 70’s super group ABBA could’ve done well on the score for this spot as well.
