CA: Democrats Feeling Queasy over AG Jerry Brown
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 12:31 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 23 June 2010 10:08
From the Politico:
California Democrats are starting to worry that gubernatorial nominee Jerry Brown — who hasn’t had a truly competitive election in three decades — isn’t ready for the 21st-century campaign trail.
Since the general election kicked off two weeks ago, Brown — the state attorney general and former governor with a well-known penchant for micromanaging all aspects of his campaigns — has made news for all the wrong reasons, while motoring along without any evidence that he is assembling a basic infrastructure for a statewide race.

Campaign Season Heats up in California
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 12:36 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 16 June 2010 01:27
From Daily Democrat:
Down-ticket races like the lieutenant governor’s battle between San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and former state Sen. Abel Maldonado, California’s highest-ranking Republican Latino, might also attract national attention. Even in San Jose, if the stars align and Major League Baseball waves everyone home, voters may be asked to bless a long-awaited A’s stadium.
Whew. Got all that?
After a campaign season that saw a jaw-dropping $150 million-plus spent on political campaigns, this next round may make that look like so many couch coins.
“It’s quite possible we’ll see financial campaign spending records shattered,” said Jude Barry, a Democratic consultant who ran Steve Westly’s failed 2006 gubernatorial

CA: Surprise Candidate Leads GOP Race
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 12:40 Written by rslcpol Friday, 11 June 2010 01:57
From TahoeDaily.com:
Villines, 43, fared well in the Central Valley, where he lives and enjoys high name recognition. But he was vilified and called a tax traitor on conservative talk radio in Southern California for his 2009 vote to raise taxes to help close the state budget deficit.
He also was listed as incumbent on the ballot in a year when many voters are angry with politicians over high unemployment, the economy and the state’s persistent budget woes.
“It was more of a vote, potentially, against me than for somebody,” Villines said.
FitzGerald was listed ahead of Villines on the ballot as an insurance department attorney.
He lists his political experience as stints working for the late Sen. S.I. Hayakawa while he was a student at Georgetown University and a San Francisco supervisor while in law school.

From MercuryNews.com:
Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado has won the Republican primary to defend his job in November against San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, the Democratic nominee.

Maldonado was skewered by his party last year when he voted for a compromise budget deal that included a tax increase.

Republicans Get Candidates in California
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 12:46 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 9 June 2010 09:16
From LA Times:
Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley convincingly won the GOP primary for attorney general on Tuesday, giving Republicans a strong chance at capturing the state’s top law enforcement job in the November contest.
His San Francisco counterpart, Dist. Atty. Kamala Harris, appeared to overcome an aggressive — and expensive — challenge in the Democratic primary as she seeks to become the first woman, first Asian and first African American to serve as attorney general. Harris claimed victory late Tuesday, though her nearest rival had yet to concede. Former Los Angeles City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo was running well behind in a crowded field.
Cooley, a political moderate who has won three district attorney elections in heavily Democratic Los Angeles County, was leading despite a bruising primary battle in which his two GOP rivals unsuccessfully attempted to portray him as being too liberal for the Republican faithful.

CA: Crowded Democrat Primary for Attorney General
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 12:56 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 1 June 2010 12:34
From Southern California Public Radio:
“Standing in courtrooms I’ve personally prosecuted homicide cases, some of the worst cases you can imagine,” San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris said.
Harris thinks the state’s attorney general should understand law enforcement from the ground up. Harris says she’d be tough on crime, but also dedicated to keeping non-violent criminals from heading back to prison time and again.
“We need to have leadership around ensuring consequences for serious and violent crime,” Harris said, “and also paying attention to one of the biggest challenges facing the state of California, which is the highest recidivism rate in the country.”
Some criminals in San Francisco ended up back on the street after the city’s crime lab botched some test results. Six hundred cases were dismissed; a judge reprimanded Harris for hiding the crime lab’s problems.
