MI: Dem House Speaker Considers Run for Governor

From GrandHavenTribune:
The Democratic race for governor took several twists Thursday, with House Speaker Andy Dillon forming a committee to explore a run and two potential candidates saying they won’t pursue the office.
Dillon’s action drew the concern of fellow House Democrat Fred Miller, who sent a letter to Dillon saying the speaker should give up his leadership position if he ends up running for governor.
Miller, of Mount Clemens, said he’s concerned that Dillon wouldn’t be able to handle his House responsibilities if he’s also running for governor. Miller said the state’s budget problems need Dillon’s full attention, and he worries a distracted Dillon might hurt the House Democratic caucus politically and from a policy standpoint.

From TheStateNews.com:
Michigan Lt. Gov. John Cherry announced Tuesday he will no longer be running as a candidate for governor in 2010.
Cherry said in a statement Tuesday that he was unable to obtain funding to “make my candidacy viable.” Current Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm is term-limited in 2010.“I was not successful (in raising funds) to the degree that was needed,” Cherry said in a statement. “With that in mind, I have come to the conclusion that to wage a successful campaign will be difficult at best.”
A mid-December poll by Rasmussen found that Cherry trailed three Republican opponents — U.S. Rep Peter Hoekstra of Holland, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard and Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox — in head-to-head races among the 500 likely voters polled.

From Mlive.com:
Metro Detroit attorney Richard Bernstein, son of 1-800-call-Sam Bernstein, has filed paperwork to run for Michigan Attorney General as a Democrat, a development first reported by OutsideLansing.com.
The filing seems to confirm a rumor from Michigan Liberal that Bernstein began hiring staffers in mid-December.
Brother Mark Bernstein will serve as treasurer on the campaign committee, according to paperwork submitted to the state.
Bernstein joins state Sen. Gretchen Whitmer in the race for the Democratic nomination.
