Arizona Democrat Announces Bid for Secretary of State

From The Herald:

A former state real estate commissioner launched his bid Tuesday to become Arizona’s next secretary of state.

Democrat Sam Wercinski pointed out the post is the state’s top election official. He said more can be done to educate voters to ensure that all ballots are counted and are not disqualified because people did not bring the proper identification or even did not show up at the right polling place.

But the central issue in the race is likely to be who voters believe is most qualified to be governor.

AZ: AG to be Candidate for Governor

From DouglasDispatch:

Legal papers filed with the Secretary of State’s Office converted what had been an “exploratory committee’’ to a full-blown campaign. The move allows him to now start gathering the signatures to put his name on the ballot for the Democratic nomination.

But Goddard, who has dodged questions about his policies for weeks by saying he was only exploring getting into the race, refused to make himself available after the filing. Aide Rodd McLeod said the campaign is planning a formal media announcement in the coming weeks.

At this point Goddard is the only high-profile Democrat in the race to oust incumbent Republican Jan Brewer.

But he may not get to run against her. She faces opposition within her own party from state Treasurer Dean Martin, former Board of Regents President John Munger and Paulden business owner Owen Buz Mills.

AZ: Attorney General Race Takes Shape

From AZCapitolTimes:

On the Republican side, Tom Horne, the state superintendant of public instruction, has filed his candidacy for the attorney general’s race, and Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas opened an exploratory committee last year. Thomas has not officially filed as a candidate, and would have to resign as county attorney to run for attorney general because his term does not end until January 2013.

Rabago filed to run as a publicly financed candidate, though a federal judge ruled that the matching funds portion of Arizona’s clean elections system is unconstitutional. The ruling was handed down the same day Rabago announced his candidacy.

AZ: State Senator Pamela Gorman Running for Congress

From the Phoenix Business Journal:

State Sen. Pam Gorman, R-Phoenix, said Monday she is running for the congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. John Shadegg.

Gorman is a conservative state senator from north Phoenix. Shadegg said last week he would not seek another term in a U.S. House district that includes Anthem, north and west Phoenix and Paradise Valley.

“Nationalized health care, corporate bailouts, out of control deficits, cap and trade; the list of irresponsible policies coming out of Washington continues to grow with each passing day,” Gorman said in a statement announcing her congressional bid. “If the last year has convinced me of anything, it’s that the politicians in Washington are out of control. They are steering our country down a road that threatens not only our prosperity but the future prosperity of our children and grandchildren in ways that many of us could never have imagined. It has to stop.”

AZ: Dem House Leader Running for Attorney General

From AZCapitolTimes:

House Minority Leader David Lujan officially announced his candidacy for Arizona attorney general on Jan. 14.

Lujan is the second Democrat to jump into the race for attorney general. Felecia Rotellini, the former director of the Arizona Department of Financial Institutions, launched her campaign in September. Assistant Attorney General Vince Rabago has expressed interest in the race as well.

In his official announcement, Lujan pledged to protect all Arizonans and bashed the state’s Republican leadership.
