CT: Democrat Secretary of State Kept 36k Person Political Database at Taxpayers Expense

From Courant.com:

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz’s politically oriented entries in her office’s 36,000-name constituent database drew criticism Wednesday from Democratic rivals, one of whom said she should make a public apology, and from Republican State Chairman Chris Healy, who called the entries “a political intelligence file for her own use … paid for by the taxpayers.”

The criticism came after The Courant’s disclosure Wednesday that the taxpayer-funded database contains thousands of what are labeled “special notes” on people’s political connections and personal characteristics, including some medical conditions. It also has a category headed “Ethnicity,” which identifies 2,431 people as either Jewish, Greek, Polish, African American, Hispanic or Native American.

CT: Republican Joins AG Race

From CTpost.com:

DANBURY — A former attorney general candidate has joined the list of Republicans seeking the party’s nomination for the post.

Martha Dean, the Republican nominee in the attorney general race eight years ago, announced this week that she has registered a candidate committee for the race. She’s the first Republican in the state to form such a committee.

“Connecticut needs to go in a very different direction,” Dean said Thursday. “The state of Connecticut is entering a full-blown crisis. We can tread water and be swept over the falls, only to be crushed by rocks, or we can take the emergency measures that are needed now.”

Special Election Win in CT: Republican Laura Hoydick headed to State Legislature

From Courant.com:

Republican Laura Hoydick is the newest member of the state legislature.

She won a special election Tuesday night in Stratford, and she will be filling the seat once held by former Rep. John A. Harkins.

Harkins, a state lawmaker since 1997 and the former House Republican caucus chairman, won the race as Stratford’s mayor and stepped down as a legislator.

“Laura’s victory echoes the message that has resonated throughout town halls and forums across our state,” said Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele of Stamford. “The change that has been promised for all too long has yet to come. That change will come from restoring the balance of power in Hartford. That message is loud and clear, and it’s time for the Democrat majority to start listening.”

CT: Republicans to Intervene in Democrat Secretary of State’s Eligibility Lawsuit

From Courant.com:

The state’s Republican Party has hired a lawyer to challenge Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz in the lawsuit she filed last week to seek a “declaratory ruling” that she is eligible to run for state attorney general.

The Republican State Central Committee Tuesday night authorized GOP State Chairman Chris Healy to hire a prominent Hartford attorney, Eliot B. Gersten, to intervene in the lawsuit.

The move raises the possibility that Bysiewicz’s legal qualifications will be aired prominently in a court hearing. She could face the unusual prospect, as a statewide elected official, of having to testify under oath about how she has spent her time in her 11 years in office.

From Capitol Watch Blog:

Despite incorrect Internet speculation to the contrary, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz is not dropping out of the race for attorney general.

Instead, she is holding a press conference Thursday morning with one of the top lawyers in the state, Wesley Horton.

Bysiewicz will be seeking a legal ruling in state Superior Court in Hartford over whether she has the requisite 10 years of active legal practice in Connecticut, which is the legal requirement to become attorney general.

Horton, who is known for the famous Horton vs. Meskill public school funding case, will host the press conference at his Hartford office – and will be joined by the state Democratic Party chairwoman, Nancy DiNardo.
