Ohio House Dems Try to Hang On

From Cleveland.com:

In 2008, Ohio House Democrats surfed a Barack Obama wave to net seven seats and seize back control of the chamber after 14 years in the wilderness.

On Thursday — as the filing deadline for the May primary passed for the 99 House races — Democrats embarked on the daunting task of maintaining their 53-46 edge as the Buckeye State is being battered by a 10.9 percent unemployment rate.

Nonetheless, House Speaker Armond Budish was resolute this week that House Democrats would keep the majority. They enter the fray this week with a fund-raising edge of more than 2-to-1.

Conducted at the end of January, the poll shows DeWine with a 50 percent to 32 percent lead on Cordray, a Columbus Democrat who won a 2008 election to finish out the term of Democrat Marc Dann.

The poll shows DeWine with a 48 to 22 percent edge over Cordray in the Attorney General’s race when it comes to a key segment of swing voters – those who describe themselves as independent. It also shows DeWine leading in all major media markets across Ohio with the exception of Toledo, where Cordray holds a nine-point edge.

State Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern said yesterday that the party will have an announcement next week regarding its candidate. State Rep. Jennifer Garrison of Marietta has been running for the seat since August.

But sources said that Garrison has drawn strong opposition from the party’s progressive base for her conservative stands on social issues and that leaders, including Gov. Ted Strickland, are prepared to embrace Franklin County Clerk of Courts Maryellen O’Shaughnessy for secretary of state.
