NY AG Candidates Take Shots in Debate

From wnyc.org:

Candidates for Attorney General of New York Eric Schneiderman and Dan Donovan squared off in a debate held Monday at WAMC public radio studios and co-sponsored by the Albany Times Union.

Republican candidate Dan Donovan hit Democratic State Senator Eric Schneiderman over a report by the state inspector general just days ago. It excoriated top Senate Democrats for severe mishandling of a deal to select a vendor for a gambling casino at Aqueduct Raceway. Inspector General Joseph Fisch has referred the actions of Senate Leader John Sampson to prosecutors. Donovan says Schneiderman, who is Deputy Majority Leader of Policy in the Senate, was “asleep at the wheel,” and should have known about the dealings and spoken out.

NM: Republican Leads Secretary of State Race

From nmpolitics.net:

The first publicly released poll of the secretary of state race – an internal poll conducted for the campaign of Republican Dianna Duran – has Duran leading Democratic incumbent Mary Herrera by 12 points.

There’s been a lot said lately about the potential inaccuracy of polls that don’t survey those who only have cell phones. Duran’s poll includes 100 cell-phone interviews, according to the poll memo.

VA AG Campaigns in Oklahoma for Republican AG Candidate

From KOSU:

The Republican candidate for Attorney General in Oklahoma calls on the Attorney General of Virginia to help in his campaign.

Former State Senator Scott Pruitt held a press conference on Monday to bring forth Virginia Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli who is currently suing the federal government over health care legislation passed in the spring.

Cuccinelli says if he’s successful then it means the entire bill will be stopped.

“If we prevail, if any of the states prevail on the individual mandate, we have asked the court to strike the entire bill to enjoin the entire bill.”

Pruitt has repeatedly promised to join in a lawsuit if elected, but he says it’s unclear whether he will be joining the one in Virginia.

GOP Looks to Take Back WI Legislature

From htrnews.com:

Things haven’t improved much since fed-up voters handed Democrats control of state government two years ago. People are still out of work. The state is still broke.

But now, Republicans are the ones hoping people are mad enough to toss incumbents out in the Nov. 2 elections and hand their party control of the state Senate and Assembly.

“This year is a complete mirror image of what we saw in ’08,” University of Wisconsin-Madison political scientist Charles Franklin said. “This year the shoe is obviously completely on the other foot.”

Legislative races often draw little attention, but they’re crucial to the state’s future. Split-party control of the House, Senate and governor’s office could result in gridlock and bog down efforts to deal with a $2.7 billion hole looming in the next state budget.

Republicans Aim to Gain seats in VT

From Vermont Public Radio:

The Vernon-Guilford district is one of a number of open House seats the GOP is hoping to hold on to or even capture from the Democrats. Republicans hold 48 seats now while Democrats hold 94. Independents and Progressives hold the rest.

Dorset Republican Representative Patti Komline, who’s running unopposed, has been helping GOP House candidates around the state.

(Komline) “And I’m hopeful we’re going to pick up seats. I’m hopeful we’ll have 51, 52 seats.”

(Keese) Komline says Republican Senate candidates are also running strong in Franklin, Chittenden and Rutland counties. Democrats currently control the Senate 23-to-seven.

IN: GOP in Strong Position in Senate

From IBJ.com:

“We’re not counting seats at this point,” said Sen. Bev Gard, R-Greenfield, chairwoman of the Senate Majority Campaign Committee. “We have a strong majority and we think we’ll continue to have a strong majority. Our first priority is what you would expect, and it’s to re-elect our incumbents.”

Half of the Senate will be elected next month, but only three races feature no incumbent. Each party is confident it will keep the newly open seats from which its party mate is retiring. Two retirees are Democratic, one Republican.

Though incumbents generally have a huge advantage in an election, Republicans identify four Democrats they think are vulnerable. Democrats see vulnerability in three Republican incumbents, including Sen. Jim Merritt, who has represented Indianapolis’s northeast side for 20 years. He is challenged by term-limited Marion County Sheriff Frank Anderson, a Democrat.

Gard said the Merritt-Anderson race may be the most expensive state Senate contest ever. Simpson said Merritt will have $500,000 to spend, while Anderson will have about half that.

NY: Endorsement for Republican AG Candidate

From NYDaily News:

Mission No. 1 for the next New York State attorney general is Albany reform through solid law enforcement and use of the bully pulpit to win higher ethical standards. The candidate best suited to leading the charge is Dan Donovan.

A respected long-time prosecutor, Donovan served for eight years under former Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau and for the last seven years as Staten Island district attorney.

His record includes boosting the office’s felony conviction rate to the city’s top ranks while making tough calls without regard to political fallout. That’s why the borough’s voters, who skew Democratic, reelected the Republican Donovan by a landslide in 2007.
