Iowa AG Candidates Clash in Debate

From The Hawk Eye:

IOWA CITY – Iowa’s Democratic Attorney General Tom Miller argued Wednesday Republican challenger Brenna Findley is driven by ideology and would end the bipartisanship he’s brought to the office.

“When I first ran for attorney general, one of the two most important principles or guidelines to me was the professionalism of the office,” Miller said in a debate with Findley at the University of Iowa law school. “I believe it’s the people’s job and the people’s work. You put politics aside when you walk through the attorney general’s door.”

Findley countered that Miller was showing partisanship when he refused in 2009 to challenge an Iowa Supreme Court ruling that a state law banning same-sex marriage violated the state constitution. She noted Miller also told county recorders they had to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

NJ: Republicans Beat Democrats in Fundraising for first time in Decade

From nj.com:

While Gov. Chris Christie is traveling the nation to support Republican candidates, his presence in the Statehouse is also helping his party at home, according to the latest fundraising reports released today.

An Election Law Enforcement Commission report on the “big six” fundraising committees — those controlled by the Republican and Democratic parties, and each party’s political leaders in the Senate and Assembly — shows Republicans outraised Democrats $834,300 to $623,487 in the quarter that ended Sept. 30 .

It’s the first time Republicans have won a fundraising battle in about a decade.

Democrats hold control of both houses of the state Legislature, but Christie broke an eight-year Democratic lock on the governor’s office when he was elected last year. For the first nine months of 2010, Democrats had outraised Republicans $1.7 million to $1.5 million. But at this time last year, when the money was flying much faster because of the races for governor and Assembly, the Democratic committees had raised $6.3 million — more than triple the Republican total.

WA: After losing primary, Democrat May Sue to Keep her State Senate Seat

From HeraldNet.com:

State Sen. Jean Berkey, D-Everett, inched closer Tuesday to a full-fledged legal fight to keep her seat and prevent anyone from sitting in it next year.

Berkey lost the August primary but contends her defeat resulted from illegal actions by a Seattle political consultant, and she wants those results tossed out.

Last month, she asked Attorney General Rob McKenna to investigate whether Moxie Media and a political action committee it created violated election laws by not disclosing who paid for last-minute mailers Berkey contends misled voters and cost her the election.

MA: AG Candidates take shots over Illegal Immigration

From wcvbtv:

Jim McKenna, running for state attorney general against Martha Coakley, got on the big stage on Tuesday with Republican ticket leader Charlie Baker during a news conference.

Republican McKenna chose to attack Democrat and incumbent Coakley on the one issue that she said he’s most vulnerable: illegal immigration.

“While she claims to be a tough cop, her inadequate record speaks volumes. It’s not surprising that Martha Coakley is a creature of Beacon Hill who goes along to get along,” McKenna said.

MA: Secretary of State’s Voter Guide a Campaign Piece?

From the Metrowest Daily News:

Jim Henderson, independent candidate for secretary of state, said a mailing from Galvin’s office, intended to inform voters across Massachusetts about ballot questions and election procedures, included additional information intended to boost the secretary’s candidacy.

The mailing, Henderson said, is “clearly designed to be a campaign piece without it being officially a campaign piece … Let’s call a spade a spade here.”

Henderson compared the mailing to Lottery ads run by the treasury that have become enmeshed in legal controversy surrounding Treasurer Tim Cahill’s independent campaign for governor. Critics allege the Lottery ads were intended to boost Cahill’s candidacy on the taxpayers’ dime. Attorney General Martha Coakley is investigating the matter and the ads have been suspended.

KS: AG Candidate go head to head in debate

From ksn.com:

The candidates for Kansas attorney general squared off today in a debate sponsored by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. Current AG Steve Six and Republican challenger Derek Schmidt took questions ranging from crime to immigration and the two proved they have very different idea beginning with the federal health care law.

“I’m one who thinks we ought to be involved in a legal challenge to the power-grab that is the federal health care law that sets an unprecedented extension of federal authority if that’s allowed to stand,” Schmidt said.

Six disagreed, saying he is first and foremost a prosecutor and not in the office to advance his own agenda.

“Not to long ago we had a career politician in this office, Phil Kline,” Six said. “We have worked tirelessly to recover from the damage that that career politician did.”
