PA: Dem AG Candidate “Shocks” with ‘478-word Diatribe’

A.G. wannabe John Morganelli is a brilliant tactician.  What better time to launch another political manifesto than when NOBODY is reading the news.  Maybe his next rant will come  over Labor Day weekend.  This guy just reeks of credibility.  From Pennlive.com:

Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli, who is not exactly known for his short e-mails, sent a brief 478-word diatribe into the ethos over the holiday weekend.

Morganelli’s latest missive to the media accuses incumbent Attorney General Tom Corbett of using taxpayer dollars to promote his re-election.

We’re shocked.

Morganelli, the Democratic candidate for AG, says that Corbett has diverted “hundreds of thousands of dollars, and maybe even a million dollars” that was earmarked for fighting illegal gun trafficking in Philadelphia and southeastern Pennsylvania in a “blatant and unaccounted use of public money” to raise his name recognition.

“Mr. Corbett has decided, like those under investigation in “Bonusgate” that our tax dollars, rather than his campaign funds, can be used for his re-election campaign,” Morganelli writes.

Is Morganelli casting judgment on legislative leaders and in particular state House Democrats who paid in bonuses after winning control of the House after the 2006 election?

PA: The Real Powerhouse in the Dem Caucus?

From the Pittsburgh-Tribune:

Over the past year, Rep. Dwight Evans has emerged as the most powerful member of the state House. “Dwight Evans is the real powerhouse now in the (Democratic) caucus,” said G. Terry Madonna, a political science professor at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster.

As chairman of the Appropriations Committee, the affable Evans, 54, of Philadelphia is the fifth-ranking member on the depth chart of Democrats, who control the House by a one-vote margin.

But political analyst Al Neri agrees Evans is No. 1, given his role in overseeing the $28 billion state budget and the “fact that there’s been no hint that he’s been tainted by Bonusgate.”

PA: Dem AG Challenger Officially Announces, Starts Mud Slinging

HARRISBURG | – Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli launched his third bid to become the state’s first Democratic attorney general Wednesday. He vowed, if elected, to appoint an independent prosecutor to investigate the millions of dollars in bonuses paid to legislative employees in 2006.

At a Capitol news conference, Morganelli said the so-called ”Bonusgate” investigation by Attorney General Tom Corbett, a Republican, had been compromised by Corbett’s close ties to former Republican Senate leaders who had authorized some of the payments and supported Corbett’s first run for attorney general in 2004.

PA: House Dems Lose Battle To GOP AG

Note not only to Pennsylvania Democrats, but to all state and local elected officials – transparency is ALWAYS a good thing – politically, legally, and professionally.

State House Democrat leaders Thursday lost a battle with state Attorney General Tom Corbett against his office’s acquisition of 20 boxes of records in the “bonusgate” grand jury probe.
Mr. Corbett, a Republican, is investigating to determine if some or all of $3.6 million in bonuses to staffers in the state legislature came in return for campaign-related work. The figure includes money given out by leaders of all four General Assembly caucuses, but House Democrats paid out $1.9 million, much more than any of the other three.
