Democratic candidates for state attorney general yesterday took varying positions on the merits of legalizing marijuana, but agreed that medical marijuana needs to be much more heavily regulated than it is now.
Assemblyman Ted Lieu of Torrance said he opposes legalization. Assemblyman Alberto Torrico of Fremont and Chris Kelly, chief privacy officer for Facebook, said any discussion of legalization is premature until the medical marijuana industry is reined in. Assemblyman Pedro Nava of Santa Barbara said he is “agnostic” on the subject.
The four, along with Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, spoke at a forum sponsored by the San Diego County Democratic Party, North County Democratic Unity, the Cal State San Marcos Democratic Club, the Escondido Democratic Club and the North County Young Democrats.

With six candidates running, the AG’s Democratic primary on June 8 promises to test what effect a wealthy candidate, a large field, and incumbency as a legislator or a sitting district attorney will have on balloting.

CA: Assembly Republican Leader Picked; Vows to Fight Taxes
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 September 2010 03:56 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 20 January 2010 01:38
From the Sacramento Bee:
Minutes after Martin Garrick was named Assembly Republican leader Tuesday, he sent a clear message to any Democrats hoping to bridge a massive budget gap with higher taxes: Forget it.
A businessman and former member of President Ronald Reagan’s administration, Garrick bills himself as a “lifelong conservative advocate.”
“Raising taxes when we’re already the highest state in sales tax and the second highest in income tax is not the way that we’re going to solve the problem,” Garrick said of a projected $19.9 billion shortfall.
By choosing the Solana Beach lawmaker to replace outgoing Sam Blakeslee as leader, the Assembly Republican Caucus signaled its intent to take a hard line in budget talks, analysts said.
