CT: Dem AG Candidate’s Legal Qualifications Questioned

From Courant.com:

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz’s legal qualifications to run for state attorney general – a candidacy she formally announced Wednesday – were questioned Thursday on the basis that, even though she is an attorney, she may not have spent sufficient time in the actual practice of law.

Bysiewicz responded that she clearly meets the requirement in state law that “the Attorney General shall be an elector of this state and an attorney at law of at least ten years’ active practice at the bar of this state.”

The issue first surfaced Thursday in this entry by lawyer Ryan McKeen in his “A Connecticut Law Blog,” with its headline raising the question “Is Susan Bysiewicz Legally Qualified To Serve As Attorney General?” He said her resume shows six years of actual law practice in Connecticut before she won election to her current office in 1998.

CT: Democrat Secretary of State makes AG Run Official

From New Haven Register:

As expected, Democratic Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz Wednesday announced she is running for attorney general, but she failed to pledge to serve a full term if elected.

One of the biggest supporters of the state’s new public financing system, Bysiewicz also said the program is “in great jeopardy,” and she was going to depend on private fundraising to run her new campaign.

She now can transfer to a candidate committee for attorney general the $467,367 she has raised as part of an exploratory committee for governor, and take contributions of up to $2,000 from individuals, as opposed to the $375 previous limit.

CT: Secretary of State to Announce Run for Attorney General

The Democrat to drop her exploration of Governor bid. From CTpost.com:

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz has scheduled a news conference in Middletown City Hall at 11 a.m. Wednesday when she, most likely, will announce her plans to run for state attorney general, according to a source familiar with her plans.

Earlier this week, she was on verge of changing her focus from the Democratic nomination for governor to state attorney general.

The move had been anticipated in the state Capitol and political circles since last week’s announcement by Attorney General Richard Blumenthal that he would seek U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd’s seat this fall.

AG Candidate in CT

From the New Haven Independent:

It took only one minute. Dick Blumenthal announced Wednesday that he’ll run for U.S. Senate this year and not run for reelection for attorney general. No sooner did he leave the microphone, than a new candidate for attorney general emerged.

That candidate is George Jepsen, a former state legislative and Democratic Party leader.

Jepsen, who’s 55, made the announcement at state Democratic Party headquarters Wednesday afternoon as soon as Dick Blumenthal concluded his own press conference there announcing his new campaign. He’ll probably have company in coming weeks.

Jespen stood in the background as Blumenthal announced that he’s leaving the attorney general’s job when his term expires this year and that he’s running for U.S. Senate.

CT AG to run for Dodd’s US Senate Seat

From CBSNews:

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is prepared to announce his bid for retiring Sen. Chris Dodd’s seat, according to reports, just hours after Dodd formally says he will not seek re-election this year. Blumenthal’s swift announcement signals his strong positioning as a Democratic candidate but also the weakness Republicans will likely try to exploit — his relationship with the beleaguered Dodd.

Blumenthal, who has served as attorney general since 1990, is expected to announce at 2:30 p.m. ET today that he will run for Dodd’s Senate seat. Dodd will formally announce his retirement at Noon
