MI: Republican Party Takes on Democrat AG Candidate with new Ad

From wjr.com:

A new Michigan Republican Party TV ad claims that Democratic attorney general candidate David Leyton failed to fully prosecute a 2006 murder case as Genesee County prosecutor.

The 30-second ad began airing Wednesday on broadcast and cable stations statewide. In the ad, Deb McIntosh claims that Leyton “cut an outrageous plea deal” with the man charged in her son’s shooting death and “refused to press charges against the other two killers.” She says her family agreed to the plea deal if others would be charged.

Republican Bill Schuette has raised nearly three times as much money as Democrat David Leyton in the campaign for Michigan attorney general.

MI: AG Candidates have their First

MI: AG Candidates on the Attack

From WILX.com:

The candidates for Attorney General came out swinging.

“You, sitting on an appellate court, have been soft on crime. You have continuously ruled for murderers, rapists,” says Democrat David Leyton of his opponent, Bill Schuette.

“There’s a woman here named Brenda Simpson. Her son was tragically murdered– poisoned and thrown in a river. And you didn’t prosecute,” Schuette rebuts.

Schuette and Leyton were each trying to portray the other as an ineffective man of the law Friday, saying the other let down victims and their families after major crimes.

“If you can’t get the job done at home, how can you be the head law enforcer of Michigan?” Schuette says.

MI: AG Candidates Offer some Contrasts

From the Examiner:

With state Attorney General Mike Cox term-limited, Flint Township Democrat David Leyton and Midland Republican Bill Schuette are running to succeed him in the Nov. 2 election, offering contrasting priorities to the voters.

Leyton, who is Genesee County prosecutor, wants to provide leadership to persuade the legislature and governor to make public safety the top priority. He also wants to focus on consumer and environmental protection, and crack down on Medicaid fraud and public corruption. Leyton would end Cox’s federal lawsuits to stop health care reform and support the racist Arizona immigration law, while continuing the lawsuit to close the Chicago shipping canal to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes. He would issue legal opinions to clarify gray areas in the state’s medical marijuana law.

Schuette, a former state Court of Appeals judge and congressman, wants to keep prisons open and felons jailed longer, while continuing all three of Cox’s federal lawsuits. A leader in the failed attempt to defeat Proposal 1, which legalized medical marijuana in 2008 and won by a 63 to 37 percent landslide margin, he remains opposed to medical marijuana.

MI: Republican AG Candidate is ‘Something New’

From Freep.com:

It had been a grueling time for Bill Schuette.

The battle for the Republican nomination for attorney general was closer than expected at the party’s Aug. 28 convention.

Immediately after, Schuette and other Republicans on the state ticket hit the road ona bus tour of Michigan.

Dog tired, Schuette headed home about 9 p.m. that Monday. Just 20 miles from his home in Midland, he spotted Martin’s Corner Store, an ice cream and convenience store in Wheeler Township. A gaggle of would-be voters sat outside on the warm summer night enjoying ice cream cones.

He couldn’t resist the opportunity. He stopped, shook some hands and tried to convince the group that he should be Michigan’s next attorney general.

MI: Poll Shows Voters Favor GOP in State Races

From The Detroit News:

Votes appear to favor Republican over Democrats in less-known statewide races such as secretary of state and attorney general, according to a Detroit News/Local 4 WDIV poll released Thursday.

Still, the pool of undecided voters is large in the down-ticket races, which may mean GOP leads could evaporate once voters begin to focus on races beyond the contest for governor.

The 600 likely voters interviewed Tuesday and Wednesday by Glengariff Group Inc. favored Republicans over Democrats even in races with low name recognition for the candidates — meaning the GOP may be the favored party this November, reflecting a nationwide trend.

The poll is the first since the parties held their state conventions where they nominated candidates for statewide races.

Michigan Republican Party chairman Ron Weiser said Republicans need to seize the whole ticket if they’re to have the power they need to turn the state around.

Michigan Republicans Pick Secretary of State and Attorney General Nominees

From the Michigan Messenger:

There was less infighting during the nominations for other positions. Oakland County Clerk Ruth Johnson became the nominee for Secretary of State on the second ballot, beating out state Sen. Cameron Brown. That race looked to belong to state Sen. Michelle McManus a few weeks ago, but perhaps recent accusations of wrongdoing by the Republican clerk of Grand Traverse County and by a former employee scared delegates away from her. She only received 237 votes.

And despite an earlier fight over seating delegates who would favor Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop in becoming the nominee for Attorney General, former Appeals Court Judge Bill Schuette won a narrow victory and Bishop then asked the convention to make it unanimous.

Schuette will face Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, nominated in an April Democratic convention, to replace Mike Cox. Ruth Johnson will face Wayne State University law professor Jocelyn Benson, also nominated in April, to replace Terri Lynn Land.

MI: Secretary of State Endorses Republican State Senator as her Successor

From freep.com:

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land today endorsed Republican state Sen. Cameron Brown as her successor.

That could give Brown, from Sturgis, a leg up against four rivals in securing the nomination at Saturday’s Republican Party state convention in East Lansing. Land, a former Kent County clerk, has been long active in GOP politics and was the running mate of Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard in his unsuccessful run for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.

In a statement, Land, who cannot run for re-election under term limits, called Brown a strong voice for conservative principles who would bring dignity and respect to the secretary of state office.
