TN: Republican Candidates for Governor open to making Attorney General elected Position

From Nashville Public Radio:

The three main Republican candidates for governor all say they’re open to making the position of state attorney general an elected office. Currently Tennessee’s supreme court appoints an attorney general, who must then argue before that court, leading some to call it a conflict of interest.

Appearing before lawyers from across the state last week, both Congressman Zach Wamp and Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey sounded off in strong opposition to the current system of appointment.

Tennessee Lawmakers Vote to Oppose Federal Health Bill

From the Tennessean:

Tennessee lawmakers against a resolution that opposes federally mandated health-care initiatives said Monday that it is unnecessary because of the recent passage of President Barack Obama’s reform legislation.

The resolution proposed by Republican Rep. Susan Lynn of Mt. Juliet was passionately debated for more than an hour before it passed 66-29.

The proposal “expresses opposition to … the creation of a federal health insurance exchange or connector, and the creation of a federal health insurance plan (public plan) option.”

Several lawmakers questioned the timeliness of the measure after the recent passage of the federal health care bill.

“This has already passed … and we just have to wait and see what happens,” said Rep. Richard Montgomery, R-Sevierville.

TN AG Says Attempt to Nullify ObamaCare is Unconstitutional

From The Commercial Appeal:

Tennessee Atty. Gen. Robert E. Cooper says the legislature’s attempts to nullify the federal health reform legislation are likely unconstitutional and, as a result, he couldn’t attempt to enforce its efforts.

Unlike his counterparts in nearly two dozen other states who have filed court challenges against the federal act, Cooper’s advisory opinion Tuesday makes clear that if the legislature wants to challenge the reforms, it must hire its own lawyer.

Poll Shows 65% of Tennesseans Against Health Care Plan

From TimesFreePress.com:

A national polling firm says its latest survey shows 65 percent of Tennessee voters polled oppose the new national health care plan signed into law by President Obama this week.

Rasmussen Reports said 57 percent also favor suing the federal government to block a provision in the law that says every American must buy or obtain health insurance.

The statewide telephone survey of 500 likely voters was conducted by Rasmussen on Monday, the day after the U.S. House approved the bill on a largely partisan vote. The margin of error for the survey is plus or minus 4.5 percent.

TN: Lt. Governor Ramsey Wants AG to Oppose Health Care Law

From Chattanooga Times Free Press:

Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, stepped up demands Tuesday that state Attorney General Bob Cooper join 13 other states in opposing implementation of new federal health care reforms.

“The United States Constitution does not give the federal government the authority for this massive power grab that will reduce individual liberty and strangle state government finances,” said Lt. Gov. Ramsey, who is Senate speaker. “Politicians in Washington may have temporarily lost their minds, but we still have our sanity out here in the states and we need to take action to roll this law back.”

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama signed the health care reform bill into law.

TN: Democrat State Senator Drops out of Governor Race

From The City Paper:

State Sen. Jim Kyle, D-Memphis, announced to members of the Capitol Hill press corps today that he is dropping his campaign for governor.

“It is clear to me that while our campaign had the assets to be competitive in the primary, the legislative fundraising restriction, the economy, and my duties as Senate leader have severely hampered my ability to generate resources which would have been vital to our success in the general election,” he said during a press conference with his wife, Sara Kyle, who is a member of the Tennessee Regulatory Commission.

Kyle said he would keep pushing his focus on education in the legislature.
