Former VA AG to join State Supreme Court

Virginia’s former attorney general is getting ready to join the state Supreme Court.

The investiture of William Mims is scheduled for Friday afternoon at the Supreme Court Building in Richmond.

Mims was named to a 12-year term on the court by the General Assembly last month. He succeeds Barbara Keenan, who was appointed to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

AG Says VA Will Sue over Health Care Bill

Virginia will file suit against the federal government charging that the health-care reform legislation is unconstitutional, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s office confirmed last night.

Cuccinelli is expected to argue that the bill, with its mandate that requires nearly every American to be insured by 2014, violates the commerce clause of the U.S. Constitution. The attorney general’s office will file suit once President Barack Obama signs the bill into law, which could occur early this week.

“At no time in our history has the government mandated its citizens buy a good or service,” Cuccinelli said in a statement last night.

Word of the impending legal action came as the U.S. House debated late into the evening and passed the landmark reform legislation, 219-212.

VA: Former AG Mims Appointed to Virginia Supreme Court

The General Assembly unanimously appointed former Attorney General Bill Mims to the Virginia Supreme Court.

Mims served as Gov. Bob McDonnell’s chief deputy attorney general until McDonnell resigned last year to concentrate on his gubernatorial race. Mims then succeeded McDonnell and served the rest of his term. Since January Mims has worked at law firm Hunton & Williams.
