WY: Republican Unopposed for Secretary of State

From trib.com:

Republican Max Maxfield is happy to avoid a primary for secretary of state so he can promote his track record in Wyoming’s second most powerful office.

Andrew Simons, the sole Democrat in the Aug. 17 primary, is seizing the chance for a head start to promote his desire to open Wyoming’s ballot initiative process.

“Wyoming citizens don’t really have a check on government the way it is now,” said Simons, who wants to make it easier to put issues before voters.

The secretary of state is essentially a lieutenant governor who would step in should the governor become incapacitated.

WY: Dem Enters Secretary of State Race

From Trib.com:

Andrew Simons isn’t just running for secretary of state — he’s looking to make history.

Simons filed paperwork Thursday to run for Wyoming’s second-highest office on the Democratic ticket against incumbent Republican Max Maxfield.

If Simons, who turns 25 in July, is elected, he would be the youngest secretary of state in the country.

The secretary of state oversees the state’s elections, records and business affairs and also serves as lieutenant governor.

Despite his youth, Simons said his experience working on Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and Gary Trauner’s congressional campaign in 2008, among other political work, has made him well-versed in election and campaign finance law.

Wyoming Won’t Join Health Care Lawsuit

From Cowboy State Free Press:

Wyoming will not join a multistate lawsuit against the federal government over the new health care reform measure, Gov. Dave Freudenthal said this morning.

“They have plenty of plaintiffs and plenty of lawyers and when the Supreme Court rules, whichever way they rule, it still affects Wyoming,” he told reporters during a press conference in his office. “I don’t believe it necessary to sign on to the complaint as it is currently offered by the states.”

The governor stressed, however, that this decision does not preclude the State from filing suit at a later date, should he and Attorney General Bruce Salzburg find cause to do so after examining the law more at length.

WY: House Speaker Launches Campaign for Governor

From Trib.com:

In a widely anticipated move following months of speculation, Wyoming House Speaker Colin Simpson will formally launch his campaign for governor on Thursday.

The scion of one of Wyoming’s foremost political families, it remains to be seen whether Simpson’s political pedigree can give him the edge in an already-crowded Republican gubernatorial primary race.

Simpson will kick off his campaign Thursday with rallies in Cheyenne, Casper and Cody.

“I’m eager to get rolling,” he said Monday.

Simpson’s announcement didn’t come as a surprise to many. He had filed an exploratory committee for governor last year.
