Gov. Tim Kaine said Tuesday that he will halt executions in Virginia until the U.S. Supreme Court issues a ruling this summer in a case challenging the constitutionality of lethal injection.Kaine postponed the April 8 execution of Edward Nathaniel Bell, who was convicted of capital murder for the 1999 killing of a Winchester police officer.
Kaine said he will do the same for other executions set before the Supreme Court decides a Kentucky case challenging the lethal injection process. The governor said he expects the court to issue a ruling by mid-July. At least two other executions could be delayed by Kaine’s decision.
