“Harry Reid is full of crap”

And you know, in this case the shoe seems to fit.

The cheap political points that the U.S. Senate Majority Leader thought he could score on an up and coming Republican leader in Utah (the type of guy you want in the U.S. Senate), Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, and the GOP nominee for President who happens to be from Arizona, are going to add up to a big fat goose egg, bagel, zip, zilch, nada…you get the gist.

Senator Reid’s problem in THIS situation is that he is either woefully misinformed about all of the steps taken by Utah’s Republican A.G. in dealing with every facet of the polygamist issue in his state, or he took temporary leave of the political instincts that have gotten him so far in his public career. What’s more, while Senator Reid’s comments were intended to maim General Shurtleff, he actually wound up doing equal collateral damage the Democrat A.G. and Democrat Governor from Arizona. Again, his political math wasn’t adding up – he probably thought he could tarnish a certain U.S. Senator from Arizona, and instead he damages his own credibility, and winds up offending two state Democrat leaders from Arizona who one day might aspire to serve along side Mr. Reid in the Senate.

Sadly for Senator Reid – the bank shot he’d hope to score, wound up bouncing back in his face and bloodying his nose. We predict that this dust up will find its way onto the cable nets in short order.

Now, if you want to see the raw interview (and you should – it’s really good stuff of Shurtleff, and gives you an insiders view on what goes into those 20 second interview snippets you see on TV) given by Utah’s Republican A.G. Mark Shurtleff in response to Harry Reid’s comments click right here. This interview footage is pure gold.

And oh yes, we’ve found the actual radio interview that Senator Reid gave on this issue. You can hear an excerpt right here, and get the whole thing from KUER right here.

SALT LAKE CITY — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff have started a war of words about the FLDS situation in Texas.Reid says he’s a cheerleader for Texas in dealing with the FLDS raid and the resulting aftermath.

“To have what goes on in Arizona and in Utah go on year after year after year, and people turn a blind eye to it – it is, I think, it is a travesty. I’m embarrassed for the two states,” Reid said Monday in a broadcast on KUER radio.

“These groups have developed politcal power,” Reid continued. “That’s what this is all about. They have developed political power, and Utah politicians are afraid to do anything about it. And I think that’s wrong.”

But Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff was quick to defend Utah’s efforts in fighting illegal activities by members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“Harry Reid is full of crap,” Shurtleff said in an interview with Fox 13 News. “Who cares what he thinks when he doesn’t have a clue about what’s going on? And you might excuse that from some senator from Rhode Island or somewhere, but the guy lives out here. He’s in a neighboring state. He’s LDS. You’d think he’d know a little about the history of what we’ve been doing out here.”

Shurtleff went on to suggest that many FLDS members who fled from Utah are now living in Las Vegas, Nev. – Reid’s home state.
