TN: House Republicans Challenge Governor On Death Penalty

Looks like Democrat Governor Phil Bredesen is dragging his feet in Tennessee death penalty cases. The Governor says because a court has ruled one of Tennessee execution methods unconstitutional, all executions should be halted. Never mind that, as House Republicans pointed out to the Governor in a press release the other day, Tennessee code allows two other methods for execution. All this right after the Governor was reelected. Kind of reminds you of the New Jersey dems vying to become the first state legislature to abolish the death penalty. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence Governor Bredesen was born in Jersey. Politically the Governor and his fellow Democrats should be careful because this political road is slippery when wet. If this goes the wrong way for his party locally and nationally, come the 2008 elections, they’ll be living on a prayer.

Bredesen, a Democrat, has said a pending Supreme Court case and a recent ruling by a federal judge in Nashville will likely postpone any executions until next summer.

House Republican Leader Jason Mumpower of Bristol said in a news release that Bredesen is “hiding behind the procedural technicalities, acting as though his hands are tied.”
