Too bad you can’t avoid airport and rental car taxes quite so easily…
LAS CRUCES A spaceport sales tax in Doña Ana County cannot be collected starting Jan. 1 as had been scheduled, according to a legal opinion issued Tuesday by the state attorney general.Attorney General Gary King’s office concluded the state Taxation and Revenue Department can’t collect the 14 of 1 percent spaceport tax until the proper framework is in place to spend the money.

This is a non-story. The developers of the Spaceport got voters to vote for the tax first because without a secure source of state funding a lot of their private partners were shying away. Now that they know they will have a secure source of state funding (whether it starts on Jan. 1 or some later time) they are developing their organization accordingly.
