Inmates who come into a large sum of money may have to pay for their stay with the Missouri Department of Corrections.
Last year, Attorney General Jay Nixon collected more than $780,000 from inmates who inherited money, won the lottery or received a settlement.
“We will continue to ferret out and lay claim to assets from those inmates who have the means to pay for the housing and care they receive from Missouri taxpayers,” Nixon said. The average yearly cost of incarceration comes to around $15,000 per offender, Nixon said.
