Many in Colorado and other Western states such as North Dakota, Montana, Utah and Alaska saw Romney as the conservative alternative to what they viewed as McCain’s centrist politics.
“I think Western Republicans are a little more conservative that Republicans generally,” said Attorney General John Suthers, an honorary finance co-chairman for Romney’s campaign in Colorado.
“And let’s be frank about it. I think those of us in the West are more apt to have Mormon neighbors, Mormon workmates. It’s just not a far-off, distant thing for us.”
