LITTLE ROCK Attorney General Dustin McDaniel on Monday certified a proposed November ballot measure to raise Arkansas’ severance tax on natural gas production for the first time in more than 50 years. McDaniel certified former utility executive Sheffield Nelson’s proposed initiated act hours after Gov. Mike Beebe said his office was preparing a competing proposal for the November ballot. Nelson said he’s confident that there won’t be two separate tax increases going before voters.
“The major point is that the governor and I are together on the issue that the severance tax is too low and needs to be changed,” Nelson said. “I’m confident that we can sit down and resolve any minor differences that we have and achieve this goal.”
