LANSING — Legal nonresidents would be able to get a Michigan driver’s license under legislation expected to be signed today by Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
Business groups want the policy change to take effect next week. It was unclear, however, whether emergency rules implementing the new law could be written and approved by then.
After protest from business groups and universities with foreign employees working in Michigan, lawmakers Thursday moved to clarify the procedure for issuing the operating permits.
“We’re very pleased that lawmakers moved quickly to resolve this issue so that we send the signal to businesses that this is a place for them to do business and for their employees to work,” said Liz Boyd, Granholm’s spokeswoman.
