New Jersey is cracking down on illegal immigration.
Between October 2007 and January 2008, police in the state asked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to check out the backgrounds of more than 6,000 immigrants. That’s almost twice as many requests as in the same period a year earlier, according to a report by The Star-Ledger of Newark.
The number of suspects being kept in New Jersey jails under the direction of the immigration agency has also jumped.
