From the Nashville paper the Tennessean:
A bill that would clear the way for English-only workplaces in Tennessee is in limbo in the state Senate while lawmakers wait to make sure it wouldn’t create more problems for employers than it solves.
The English-only workplace bill would amend the state human rights law to make it clear that employers would not be violating workers’ civil and employment rights if they order them to speak English while they are on the clock.
The bill’s detractors call it an invitation to workplace discrimination. Its sponsor, state Sen. Jack Johnson, a Brentwood Republican, calls it a common-sense measure to protect employers from lawsuits for simply trying to ensure workplace safety and good customer relations.
