State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said Wednesday that he is suing 13 contractors for what he called a botched expansion project at the York Correctional Institution in Niantic.
The lawsuit claims contractors knew or should have known that the work at the women’s prison was defective. It seeks more than $18 million to fix water leaks and cracked walls.
The companies designed, built, tested and insured construction of 22 buildings between 1991 and 1997 at a cost of more than $50 million, Blumenthal said.
Blumenthal says water damage to interiors in some buildings is significant and stone has fallen from exterior walls.
“These contractors shortchanged taxpayers and squandered scarce criminal justice resources,” he said in a statement.
