The drinking and driving dem who made headlines as the star of his arrest tape decides against running for reelection:
Troubled state Rep. Rob Briley, who was captured on videotape screaming for police officers to shoot him after he led them on a high-speed chase, will leave office at the end of his term.
State House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh on Tuesday confirmed Briley’s decision.
“Representative Briley informed me of his decision earlier today,” Naifeh said in a statement. “I respect his decision and know that it did not come lightly.”
The Nashville Democrat’s future in the legislature has been in doubt since last fall, when he was caught careening through Wilson County. When police pulled him over, he cursed the officers and pleaded with them to shoot him in the head during a tantrum that was captured on the cruiser’s video camera.
[…] As one dem leaves, another one goes down the same path… NEW YORK – State Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV was charged with drunken driving after police said he was unsteady behind the steering wheel and then failed a breath test early Thursday.Powell, who represents East Harlem in the state Assembly, was stopped around 2:30 a.m. while traveling north on a Manhattan parkway, police said. A complaint filed in Criminal Court said Powell “had watery eyes, had slurred speech, had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and was operating the vehicle in an unsteady and abrupt manor.” Authorities said Powell told police he had a few drinks but was not drunk.
